Blog Entry 1 of 5 A Girl with a Gallery
This blog is a journal and dialogue of discovery, knowledge and questioning about all things cultural and artistic - fine art, craft, design, sculpture, architecture, food, fashion, theater, dance, spoken word, writing, poetry and anything else I can fit in! Although I am a Denver native, I lived, studied and ran my art business in London for several years. Moving back to the metro Denver area in 2003 was a big adjustment artistically and culturally. Art is a big part of my life and is present for me everyday.

A few of my favorite things
Contributed by: Kim Harrell   on 11/4/2007

This is the third year running the gallery, East End Applied Arts. Its a hard business but it has its rewards. The rewards are the kinds of things that make being a human special; what keepsus a step above the four-legged and winged creatures. We create art. Discovering new artists and working with the ones who have been with me from the beginning continues to fuel my passion for running this business. The art business is like no other business. It breaks all the molds, if you want my opinion, but there are few core factors that make for a successful venture. The most important to me is customer service. How are you treated when you walk through the door? How are you treated when you have a problem with an item or service? Do you feel valued? Will you go back? Will you tell your friends? I want my customers to feel good from the beginning to the end. It is art, afterall, that has brought us together and so immediately we share common ground. The rest of it comes easy.

When it comes to money...well, people can be funny about money. I have found its important to be up front about it from talking to the artist about pricing and commission from the get-go to clearly displaying prices for the patrons. I do not have the attitude 'if you have to ask, you can't afford it'. That is not very nice and makes no one feel good about the experience. We are talking art here! This is an artists living in some cases. Lets be honest about it.

What are my favorite things about being in the art business? Its the people - the artists and the customers - and bringing them together through art. I think this is true for all art forms. Its about bringing people together to share a the experience of being human. You can feel beautiful, feel sadness, feel awe, feel like a child, get some goosebumps. That's the good stuff. My eyes will water up when I speak with clients about a piece or in conversation with an artist who is telling me what their art is about. Some of the artists have to be drawn out to share their stories.

Sharing stories, telling stories is what an artist told me is what itseems to beabout for me with the work I show in the gallery. She hit it on the head!

My Favorite Things is a holiday art exhibition of nineteen of my favorite artists, old and new. The opening is November 16 from 5 -9 pm and then runs through Dec 29. Visit the website at www.eastendarts.com for more info or call 720-203-3575.

The only thing I know about art is whether or not I like it. But I guess that's what art is, isn't it? Nice piece.
