Blog Entry 24 of 83 North Denver Doorbell
Greetings. I'm the editor at YourHub.com and I use this blog to share what's going on in my 'hood and beyond. If you're curious, the North Denver Doorbell is the regular honking we hear in our neighborhood as motorists approach alley intersections or when they don't feel like getting out of their cars to politely knock or ring a doorbell.

Oscar party competition proves suspenseful
Contributed by: Fairlight Baer/YourHub.com   on 2/26/2007

An enemy was in my presence last night. She had the nerve to enter my home.

Her name is Chenine and this is the second time my so-called friend has beat me at predicting the most Oscar wins.

Though I made a far superior showing this year compared to our bout in 2005, it is no less humiliating. This year, Chenine had 13 correct and I had 12. Friends Gretchen, Amanda and Gabe did worse than we did, so their friendship is not in question.

I thought this would be my year, as I saw 14 of the nominated films. Five of those in the last two days. Where did I go wrong? With my supporting actor and best picture picks I suppose.

I decided supporting actor favorite Eddie Murphy didn't deserve it after I saw Dreamgirls yesterday, so my vote went to Djimon Hounsou for his performance in Blood Diamond. That darn talented actor Alan Arkin got it instead. And for best picture, I selected Babel, which I loved, over The Departed, which is still marked as long wait on my Netflix queue.

Oscar-nominated films I caught this year

- An Inconvenient Truth-When I pay off my car, I'll be purchasing a more fuel-efficient model.

- Babel-This one's equally beautiful and troubling. Seeing it in the big theater at the Mayan on a cloudy Sunday helped set the mood. Also, did you know director Alejandro González Iñárritu didn't have the Moroccan cast in place 17 days before filming? He selected nonprofessional actors from a village for the movie, and the veterinarian on the film is a real village veterinarian who reportedly had stinky hands during filming.

- Blood Diamond- Moissanite anyone? Also, I suspect Leonardo DiCapriohas avoided sunscreen to finally score a few wrinkles on his baby face.

- Click-I'm not a fan of comedies that turn into tragedies.

- Dreamgirls-Who knew Beyonce could be upstaged? Sightings of Jaleel White (Urkel on Family Matters), John Krasinski (Jim on The Office), John Lithgow and Dawnn Lewis (Jaleesa on A Different World) carried me through the slower scenes.

- Half Nelson-Powerful. I forgot the people I was watching were actors.

- Jesus Camp-My draw dropped several times .

-
Letters from Iwo Jima-This film can claim several touching scenes.

- Little Children-I haven't been so tense in a movie in years.

- Little Miss Sunshine-Theaters should offer complimentary tissue for the tears and ibuprofen for the stomachs sore from laughing so much .

-
Notes on a Scandal- Judi Denchis one of a kind .

-
The Devil Wears Prada-The book was way better .

-
The Last King of Scotland-What role can't Forest Whitakerplay well? Gillian Anderson is impressive in a non-Scully role.

- The Queen-I saw this while jet-lagging on a Tokyo-San Francisco flight. Helen Mirren's performance was so understated that I'm still working toward appreciating it as much as I should.

But where disappointment in ego-boosting exists there are also remnants of contentment after having a splendid evening with friends. Key to the plot was a Cobb salad bar (the dish is apparently a Hollywood original ), hummus and crackers, wine and champagne and 2 ½-month-old cutie Sam in tow.

Here is a complete list of the winners. Have you seen an exceptionally good or bad movie lately? Post a review.

The Departed all the way baby! They should teach that one in film schools.
