Blog Entry 22 of 149 Bad Mom
I call myself Bad Mom because at the time I came up with it, I was learning about the assumptions we put behind our words. I was following the pattern of not believing that my kids are okay, and speaking to them from that basis. I changed that, and it made a big difference. I am from Utah and my people are still living there. My husband was in the Air Force and we rattled around until we saw Colorado, and we stuck.

Little Horror Movies in a Child's Mind
Contributed by: Lisa Arata   on 10/23/2007

In no particular order, these were the scariest mental scenarios of my childhood:

1. Praying, and imagining God was not happy with me, Angels and spirits hovering over me knowing I'd had "bad thoughts."

2. The same angels and spirits going away when the light went out, to be replaced by hovering, swirling demons and witches who might be able to get me if I accidentally put more than my eyes and nose outside the covers.

3. Worse demons and monsters under the bed, who could grab my ankles.

4. The very worst one, who lived in the bottom of the toilet and would stick his hand up at night if you had to go to the bathroom.

5. The blackness itself, which felt a little bit like liquid on my skin--the perfect medium for entities to swim through.

I still have a little place on my back, between my shoulders, that I imagine the flying monkies and demons would grab me by, if there were such ghouls in the dark. I'm able to walk through dark spaces now, but I never forget that I once feared demons.

I forgot to add that the tarantula would hover over the city - b/c it would be just as big as the city. AHHHHH!

I always imagined the possibility of a rainbow-colored tarantula invading the entire city of Lakewood when I was younger - or that people just as tall and skinny as the statues near the Convention Center in Denver would do the same. There's more where that came from - but I have goosebumps now.

What you can do is, pull down the covers, go to the light switch, get ready, get set, switch off the light and run for the covers! Or get a coat hanger if your bed is close enough to the switch and just reach your arm out.
