Kate's thoughts on life in all it's wonder.

Requiem to Harry Potter
Contributed by: Kate Herrell   on 7/23/2007

Before I begin, I feel I should explain: along with not giving away who dies or how it all ends, I will also not reveal my personal feelings about any characters in the series, albeit the headliner.

A part of me died with the last page of the series; the part that clammored for more in every book I read and allowed me to truely suspend my disbelief and walk among the wizards in the world of J.K. Rowling. I can't imagine how different my life would be without the books; but surely, it would have been missing something. Something to love, someone to root for, someplace to long for. And so, this is my obituary to the series that helped me grown up, and to the feeling that came with having someplace to go to think; the world of Harry Potter.

This final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, goes beyond all realm of belief... and yet, every single piece of it is so elegantly crafted, nothing seems far-fetched or rediculous. It is a perfect ending to the perfect series.

These books have been a pivotal part of the last ten years of my life. I can't imagine ever loving a character more then Harry Potter, or wanting something as bad as the demise of Voldemort. If I live to be 125, I will always keep a special space on my shelf for the books that shaped my youth, and I vow to share the magic with my children and grandchildren in years to come.

I have shed more tears over these books then could fill a fishbowl, laughed more laughs then could fill an auditorium, and felt more proud of my relationship to the stories then of any work by any author in the history of literature.

I feel empty and lost without my beloved fantastical friend.

But now that this journey has drawn to a close, I feel no regret for the countless hours I spent in bed reading the beautiful prose. Long after J.K. Rowling has put away her quill, and even after Fawkes' fire has burned for the last time, the love that this series has brought me over the years will present an even greater gift; Harry Potter will never die, as long as someone is rooting for him. I for one, will fight for Harry until my last breath.
