Blog Entry 5 of 24 Strong Women: Making & Discovering Their History
Book & movie reviews, website recommendations and articles for women.

Can You Be a "Pioneer" and Not Be Free?
Contributed by: Ali Frederick   on 10/25/2007

For all their show of strength,
their straight backs,
and strong will,
Charlotte Bronte & Edith Wharton still exhibit a profound entrenchment in social prisons.

Charlotte in her rewrite of Emily's work so that it appears tamer, less grim and more Christian

and

Edith who lingered in a love-less marriage because divorce was unacceptable.

Neither woman, though pioneers, were truly free.
Are you allowing yourself to be held back by societal expectations or other prisons?

I feel held back sometimes. It's just hard to distinguish between real pain because something is truly wrong with the way I'm living, or if I've lost touch with reality and it's in my mind.

I'm being held back mostly by my undergarments right now. And, as much as you want to smack me for divulging, you want to also thank me for 16-hour support. But, really, very nice piece. Thank you.
