Blog Entry 74 of 149 Bad Mom
I call myself Bad Mom because at the time I came up with it, I was learning about the assumptions we put behind our words. I was following the pattern of not believing that my kids are okay, and speaking to them from that basis. I changed that, and it made a big difference. I am from Utah and my people are still living there. My husband was in the Air Force and we rattled around until we saw Colorado, and we stuck.

Nirvanax Part III

Amari and the gang are tromping up the stairs. It's five stories up, so they're winded. They come into my mom's place. Those who haven't seen it before go, "Hayyy!" It's an expression that means anything from 'wow' to 'I don't like this,' to 'I'm about to kill you.' It came from the TV show "Majinks," which you can't even imagine back in those old school times you live in.

I go, "Hayyy" back, but things like that aren't making me laugh. I feel cool and calm. Amari is looking at me carefully. She knows something is up. Well, it's not what she thinks, though.

This was supposed to be Amari's Nex party.

Both of us girls work at the north security center. We spent many a shift there, watching screens. Most of the time it's boring work. We ate and drank and clowned around. But you had to be careful because there are also screeners watching you at work. Anyhow, Amari and I were close. She is little and has pretty, almond-shaped eyes. I'm big and I have blue eyes and kinky hair. I'm the brains, and she's the looks of this outfit.

When Nirvanax came out, we both agreed it was a good idea. Finally, old people could just get rid of themselves whenever they wanted, like in that classic movie, Harold and Maude, starring Allison Janney and That Affleck kid. It made so much sense. Soon the nursing homes will be empty.

Then we heard about "ax." I came out as dead-set against it. No way should young people be able to comfortably kill themselves. I mean, that's not what life is for. Life is a big show, full of fun and drama and tragedy. Life is once, as far as we know. And, and, people think it should all be perfect and if it's not, goodbye. But there's something wrong with that. Evidence: Nothing is perfect. Not even God.

Pull me up, I'm getting too deep.

Amari seemed to agree with me at first. I thought we were cool on that. But she kept asking questions. We had talks about it until I got tired of the subject. She thought it should be considered a part of liberty to decide when you quit.

She talked to other people we knew too. Especially this guy named Kreed. He actually told her he could get her some. I wasn't there when he said it, but you know how things get around in the Warren.

The Warren is where I live when my mom is in town. It's an apartment house for people ages 18 to 21. Instead of renting rooms, you pay a monthly fee and stay wherever you want. We have...we had...some good times there. But there are some real rats too. You can imagine.

Amari pulled a dirty trick on me, and she doesn't think I know.
