Blog Entry 61 of 81 YourHub is a great forum
My wife says I have an opinion on everything. I guess that is correct as I possess what I call "McKnowledge": Knowing pretty much about a lot of things but not a lot about anything in particular. It is a type of surface knowledge learned as a salesman that allows me to converse with anybody from Snoop Dogg to George Will. It's fun but occasionally I have to get down and dirty and use that pesky "research" when I am writng a column since it is every columnist's nightmare to make an error. Short bio: I spent 4 years in the U. S. Air Force, graduated from the University of Central Missouri, had a career in sales that allowed me to move to Scottsdale, AZ in 1989. In 2004 I wrote a 7 part series on the history of television through the 1970's for TV TOME (now TV.com). I have done some TV ,radio, and public address work and write columns and blogs for the SCOTTSDALE REPUBLIC section of THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC and the NORTH SCOTTSDALE INDEPENDENT. I enjoy doing blogs and stories for YourHub in the ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS.

Remember "girl name" songs?
Contributed by: Jim McAllister   on 5/1/2008

I was listening to the radio in the car today and one of my favorite old "girl name" songs was played. It was "Francine" by ZZ Top, a cut from the 1972 album "Rio Grande Mud." Needless to say, I turned the volume all the way up and broke off the knob. (Got a girl, her name's Francine, finest thing you ever seen, and I love her). Oh, yeah!

ZZ Top's use of a girl's name in the title made me wonder about all the other great "girl name" songs that have been popular through the years. If you are like me and grew up a pop music fan, each song will bring back a memory of when you heard the song in the past.

The first one I thought of was "Peggy Sue" by Buddy Holly. What a great tune to take me back to high school in 1957. I had just gotten my drivers's license that year and must have heard that song a million times on the radio cruising through Frisch's Drive-In restaurant in Cincinnati and looking for girls.

In 1966, a garage band from Chicago called The Shadows of Knight recorded the Van Morrison written tune "Gloria." It was a great, grinding, song that was easy to sing and dance to, especially after you had downed a few beers. I was 6 months out of the Air Force and had met a beautiful, 20 year old co-ed at the U. Of Cincinnati named Barb, who would eventually be my wife. We were both young, enjoying life, and having a great time together. Thanks, Van, for writing "Gloria."

A couple years later in 1968, I was living in Missouri and The Monkees were popular. One of my favorites from those guys was "Valleri." We had parties at a vet's club near school where "Valleri" always made the playlist. I loved the part where we sang to the record: And her name is Val, al, al,al, al leri! Those were fun days, I wonder what happened to those guys.

In 1972, it was Derek and the Dominos (Eric Clapton) doing "Layla." Another great song and I remember it at many parties. 1972 was the year we bought our first house in Kansas. $26,000 for 3 bedrooms, 2 car garage, large lot on a lake and cul-de-sac. Falstaff beer was also $1.00 per 6 pack and I had my share of that while working in my new yard and listening to that new phenomenon, rock music on FM radio.

I could go on forever about the girl songs. I'm sure you have great memories of your own and when you hear your faves, relate to a time andplace when you heard that tune.

Here's a few more you probably know: "Sherry" 1962, by The Four Seasons, "Eleanor Rigby" 1966, by The Beatles, "Mustang Sally" 1966, by Wilson Pickett, "Brandy" 1972, by The Looking Glass, "Maggie May" 1971, by Rod Stewart, "My Sharona" 1979, by The Knack, "Jenny 867-5309" 1982, by Tommy Tutone, "Billie Jean" 1983, by Michael Jackson

What are your favorite "girl name" songs? I have barely scratched the surface with my list.

Hi, Gladys. I don't know of any hit songs with "Gladys" in the title but the great Rhythm and Blues group Gladys Knight and the Pips recorded many hits that made the Billboard Magazine top 100 chart. In fact, my records show that have had 26 songs make that exalted list. That says a lot about what a great name you have. Thanks for your comment.

Makes me think of the movie " Play Misty for me". You are all lucky you are not named Gladys. There was a song about a cow named Gladys when I was young.Oh how I hated to hear it.

Michael, Not too big on "Mickey" by Toni Basil in 1982, huh? That song actually made it to #1 that year. Kind of a sad commentary on the state of music in the early 80s although Toni looks pretty cute bouncing around in that cheerleader's outfit in the video. It's still better than the garbage that passes for pop music now. It's no wonder that the classic rock stations do so well.

Nikki, To paraphrase Bogart in "Casablanca" (1943): "Of all the names in the world Prince could have picked for that embarrassing song, why did it have to be Nikki?" I can see your point although Michael does claim that the girl in the lobby of the Brown palace looked suspciously like you. LOL

Jim, I thought it was the Four Tops, but I wasn't sure. Can we switch genders for a moment? My LEAST favorite song with a man's name? Easily "Hey Mickey you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey Hey Mickey! I still get hit with that one from time to time. Nikki, I'm pretty sure I saw you in the lobby of the Brown Palace reading GQ. Come on, come clean.

I sent hate mail to The Purple One after he released a lovely little ditty with my name in the title. Just so we are all clear, I NEVER hang out in hotel lobbies with magazines. NEVER.

Lisa, I always liked Joni Mitchell especially with "Big Yellow Taxi." Have you ever seen "The Last Waltz" (1978)? A great movie about the farewell concert of The Band at San Francisco's Winterland Ballroom on Thanksgiving Day, 1976. Martin Scorsese directed it and it included a lot of the stars of the day like Joni Mitchell, Eric Clapton, Dylan, Neil Young, Joe Cocker and many others. Well worth a look, always brings a tear. Thanks for the comment.

Joni Mitchell--Amelia, and Song for Sharon come to mind. They're like letters to her friends.

Karin, I always thought they were singing "Bob-bob-bob-bob-bob a-ran." I guess the sound wasn't too good on those old 45s. They still made it to #6 on Billboard in Feb. of '66. Who was Spearhead? I remember The Police doing "Roxanne" in '79 as a mild hit (#32) but I thought Sting was the singer. Was "Spearhead" his nickname?

Michael, I never had a problem with "Bernadette." It does sound like "Burn the Debt" though. It made it to #4 in '67 and there was a lot of burning that year, especially in Detroit, the home of Motown and The Four Tops who did the song. Kind of a strange tie-in. Do I see Freud over there in the corner?
