Blog Entry 5 of 39 The Random World
I'm a slow burn that needs repeated readings. If you're a fan of my work, I'll send you a dollar, because I'm not above bribery to keep you coming back for more. Thank you...

Paul's mixtape V.1-The Goods
Contributed by: paul hughes   on 3/20/2007

So I read John Zwicks mixtape blog, then Tabitha Dial's mixtape blog and got jealous...so here is mine. All I have to say about mine...one word...essential.

Let's Go Crazy-Prince
What better song to start off the mix tape. This song is the guaranteed party starter.

I Found That Essence Rare-Gang of Four
This is arguably one of the greatest post-punk bands out there and easily one of the best songs in their arsenal.

Funkadelic-Can You Get To That
George Clinton got a little sketchy with Atomic Dog but this is essential. If you don't own Maggot Brain...go now....quit reading and go buy it...now kids. It will save lives.

Dropkick Murphy's-Shipping Off To Boston
If I ever decide to get into some wicked bar room brawl, this is the song that I hope is playing over the loud speakers, turned up to 11 as I crack a pint glass over someone's head.

Supergrass-Pumping On Your Stereo
After you've gotten the fight out of you (see above), and everyone's sitting around nursing broken jaws, swollen eyes and finding their teeth. Buy everyone a round and sing along to this.

Police and Thieves-The Clash
This is easily my favorite Clash song.

Pulp-Sorted for E's and Wizz
Back in 1996, at a little Denver club called the Mercury Lounge, The man Jarvis Cocker and his little band rolled into town and played most of Different Class. I was there, they played this song. My smile was ear to ear.

Manic Street Preacher-ifwhiteamericatoldthetruthforonedayitsworldwouldfallapart
It's too bad this band went the way of Bon Jovi because when they first started out, they had a lot of fight in them. The song title should tip you off as to the fight.

Super Furry Animals-The Man Don't Give a $#@%
If I'm not mistaken this song was a B side but none the less a gem. 3 years ago when I saw them live, they played this song wearing sasquatch costumes...no I wasn't medicated, they truly were wearing sasquatch costumes.

The Gun Club-She's Like Heroin To Me
"She's like heroin to me, she cannot miss a vein". I'm playing this song at my wedding.

The Cure-The Lovecats
When you're staring at the girl/guy that you're keen on, and that girl/guy is reciprocating, and at any moment you could go at each other in the throws of passion; this is the song that needs to be playing in the background.

Idlewild-When I Argue I See Shapes
I'm going to tag a cliché on this band. They're the best band you've never heard of.

Fiona Apple-Extraordinary Machine
Ms. Apple released Extraordinary Machine last year, and before that the original album that was shelved was eventually leaked onto the internet. That original album and it's stripped down sound was vastly superior, but one song remained intact...you guessed it.

David Bowie-Life on Mars
Off the Hunky Dory album, my personal opinion, it's a better album than Ziggy Stardust.

Bob Dylan-The Man in Me
Another guy I feel I should be more into but I'm not, so shoot me. This is a good song though.

Dios Malos-Starting Five
My friend Travis got me into these guys; they're from Hawthorne California and write songs that make Brian Wilson really jealous.

Harry Nilsson-Jump into the Fire
Mr. Nilsson got all emo and cried when he sang and wrote that "Without You" song. Then he did a boatload of speed and wrote this song.

Roxy Music-Editions of You
This comes from the Brian Eno era of Roxy Music. I wish I could have seen these guys live.

Shins-Australia
I remember when I ordered a Mudhoney CD from Sub-Pop, they sent my Mudhoney plus a single called "Know Your Onion" which is on the Shins first album. I've been hooked ever since.

Devo-Gut Feeling_Slap Your Mammy
Its Devo man...enough said.

Holly Golightly-You Have Yet to Win
She deserves to be bigger; such a fantastic singer/songwriter.

Devotchka-How It Ends
It's good to see the local heroes get more exposure, they fricking deserve it. Their live shows are legendary. This song is so good.

My Morning Jacket-Anytime
Why isn't everyone into these guys? Of course if everyone was, then I would bail and sport some elitist attitude about how I was into them when... nevermind then.

More to come I'm sure...

As to the Dropkick Murphys song, my brawling pick goes to "Barroom Hero." It's a good thing they're a punk band, though. Can't get away with just dropping an octave the second those notes get too high anywhere else!

1) I am a huge MMJ fan. 2) I, too, knew about Devotchka way before that one movie. 3) "Jump Into the Fire" is awesome on "Goodfellas."
