Last minute costumes for Halloween at the Bluebird
Contributed by: Eric J. Lubbers/YourHub.com   on 11/1/2007

"We're from Denmark, so we don't know about Halloween. I do know that lots of girls walk around dressed like sluts. And we love them."
- Sune Rose Wagner, lead singer of the Raveonettes at the Bluebird Theater on Oct. 31

Sarah
and I had several ideas for Halloween costumes floating around over the last three weeks, including recreating one-half of an ABBA cover (she's blond and Swedish, I'm bearded and Danish) and Abraham Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth's sexy sister (see previous parenthetical remark).

But the time came and we realized that on the morning of the holiday itself, we'd managed not to get anything ready and we had a Raveonettes concert at the Bluebird to go to.

So thanks to Sarah's roommate, who is going to pharmacy school, we procured some plastic syringes, lab coats and stethoscopes for our costume.

But we weren't going as just any doctor couple, no sir. That would be boring.

We were going as Drs. Dakota and William Brock, from director Robert Rodriguez's pitch-perfect lo-fi zombie exploitation flick Planet Terror, which was released earlier this year with Quentin Tarantino's Deathproof as a double feature.

I tried and tried to find the best clip of Dakota giving her creepy needle spiel from the movie, but I couldn't find one, we'll have to settle for this clip of the, let's say "tense," relationship between the two characters (link)
We included all the major components of their characters: Sarah had the heavy eye makeup, the color-coded syringes and the short skirt of Dakota, while I had the thick glasses, lanyard and ever-present glass thermometer of William.

Let's just say we weren't going on recognizability.

We got to the Bluebird to see the Raveonettes, the most adorable Danish rock band in history, and I saw lots of decent costumes.

Click here to hear The Raveonettes. (warning: the guitar fuzz is laid on pretty thick)

There was a couple dressed as bananas, Captain & Tenille, the Scarecrow from Wizard of Oz and approximately 150 people dressed like killjoy party-pooper hipsters.

That's right, probably less than 1/3 of the people at the show were in costume. That's shameful, Denver. Show some spirit. Even driving around the city afterwards, I saw pathetically few costumes out and about. Maybe I just don't go to the right places, but I know this city is creative. I want to see awesome costumes on the one day per year it's acceptable to wear them.

Did you have/see a great costume last night? Post it in the comments or send it to me at lubberse@YourHub.com and I'll post it on my blog.

We talked about it. That might happen next year with some planning and foresight.

Awesome costume ideas! Though, it would have been cooler to recreate Rose McGowan's gun leg on Sarah. Ha.
