Do you miss your favorite pop music acts from the past? If your favorite time was the disco era, you may be in trouble although everything seems to run in cycles and disco may make a comeback eventually.
At the present time, some of the other acts we enjoyed years ago are coming back via concert tours that are doing quite well. They might call these tours the "long in the tooth tours" but fans are glad to see their old favorites. For example: One of the top grossing groups in 2007 was The Police. Their average age is now 59. Sting and the boys grossed $133.2 million on tour in 2007, higher than any other band regardless of age. They have extended the tour into 2008 and will be at Cricket Pavilion in Phoenix on May 24.
Another "long toother" is Rod Stewart. Rod is now 63 and still touring. Rod's shows grossed $49 million 2007. Phil Collins and Genesis (average age 57) grossed $47.6 million last year. Rumor has it that Robert Plant and Led Zeppelin may be going on the road this coming summer along with another favorite from the 1970s, Foreigner.
With the state of popular music these days, it's no wonder these groups do well. I think their popularity is an exclamation point as to what the general public wants. Not that the younger acts aren't doing well too. Justin Timberlake grossed $70 million on tour in 2007. But, the nostalgia for the older groups seems dominant now.
We all yearn for the joys of our youth. A few years ago Bob Dylan played a venue in Sun City, AZ. I considered going but couldn't pull the trigger. Bob Dylan in Sun City? That was a bit too much. It might be interesting to see the crowd that shows up at Cricket Pavilion to see The Police though.
