Blog Entry 63 of 70 YourHub is a great forum
My wife says I have an opinion on everything. I guess that is correct as I possess what I call "McKnowledge": Knowing pretty much about a lot of things but not a lot about anything in particular. It is a type of surface knowledge learned as a salesman that allows me to converse with anybody from Snoop Dogg to George Will. It's fun but occasionally I have to get down and dirty and use that pesky "research" when I am writng a column since it is every columnist's nightmare to make an error. Short bio: I spent 4 years in the U. S. Air Force, graduated from the University of Central Missouri, had a career in sales that allowed me to move to Scottsdale, AZ in 1989. In 2004 I wrote a 7 part series on the history of television through the 1970's for TV TOME (now TV.com). I have done some TV ,radio, and public address work and write columns and blogs for the SCOTTSDALE REPUBLIC section of THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC and the NORTH SCOTTSDALE INDEPENDENT. I enjoy doing blogs and stories for YourHub in the ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS.

Old rock groups thriving
Contributed by: Jim McAllister   on 5/16/2008

Do you miss your favorite pop music acts from the past? If your favorite time was the disco era, you may be in trouble although everything seems to run in cycles and disco may make a comeback eventually.

At the present time, some of the other acts we enjoyed years ago are coming back via concert tours that are doing quite well. They might call these tours the "long in the tooth tours" but fans are glad to see their old favorites. For example: One of the top grossing groups in 2007 was The Police. Their average age is now 59. Sting and the boys grossed $133.2 million on tour in 2007, higher than any other band regardless of age. They have extended the tour into 2008 and will be at Cricket Pavilion in Phoenix on May 24.

Another "long toother" is Rod Stewart. Rod is now 63 and still touring. Rod's shows grossed $49 million 2007. Phil Collins and Genesis (average age 57) grossed $47.6 million last year. Rumor has it that Robert Plant and Led Zeppelin may be going on the road this coming summer along with another favorite from the 1970s, Foreigner.

With the state of popular music these days, it's no wonder these groups do well. I think their popularity is an exclamation point as to what the general public wants. Not that the younger acts aren't doing well too. Justin Timberlake grossed $70 million on tour in 2007. But, the nostalgia for the older groups seems dominant now.

We all yearn for the joys of our youth. A few years ago Bob Dylan played a venue in Sun City, AZ. I considered going but couldn't pull the trigger. Bob Dylan in Sun City? That was a bit too much. It might be interesting to see the crowd that shows up at Cricket Pavilion to see The Police though.

Hi, Lisa. How is the writing going? I liked Seals and Crofts in the 70s, really products of their times along with Loggins and Messina and Jim Croce. Seals is running a coffee farm in Costa Rica now and Crofts is raising Arabian horses in Texas. Their album you mentioned is "Traces" from 2004 which is a bunch of their old hits like my fave "Diamond Girl." You're right, these guys change over time. Remember Brewer and Shipley with "One Toke over the Line" and "Tarkio Road"? Great tunes.

The whole baby boomer phenomenon is aging. I love the new recordings by my favorite old acts. Seals and Crofts had a release a couple of years ago, and you can hear the wisdom that has sunk into them.

Gail, sorry about assuming it was your son. Apologize to your daughter for me. Rod Stewart was good in those days of "Maggie May." I applaude him for hanging in there but one night I saw him on Jimmy Kimmel and he was bad. The old groups may be getting action out of those who would like to go back to that era and be younger again but from some of the reviews I have read most of the acts have lost their energy. The review of Van Halen's performance in Cincinnati wasn't very good. David Lee Roth has slowed down quite a bit. He should, he is 53 now! A little old to be singing "JUMP!" I think the Moodys are still touring too.

Daughter, actually. I hear familiar lyrics, like, "Wake up Maggie, I think I've got something to say to you..." I was not much of a concert goer, still don't. I liked the Moody Blues and a few other weird ones, and John Denver.

Hi, Gail. "Grooved to", huh? Your son reinforces what I have thought for a long time: The pop music of today is SO bad that the classic stuff is still as popular as when it came out. Someone told me tickets for The Police are going for $285 each and people are paying it. Times sure change, my first concert was Foghat in 1970 and I paid $3. I paid about $5 to see ELO and Robin Trower a few years later.
