It isn't often that I find myself motivated to write. It usually needs to be something incredible and amazing that I've experienced- something that resonates to my core. John Mayer's 'Split Screen Sadness' is the incarnation of that feeling in me right now.
I have had favorite songs; who hasn't? I have never, though, experienced music that manages to convey so much feeling that my body, brain and heart react.
The first time I heard Split Screen Sadness, I felt constantly nudged to tears. I felt that a deep sadness was welling up in me towards a threshold that I didn't realize I was capable of. It just...kept...rising. The words are so powerful, I can't adequately describe it. But, everyone's heard powerful wordsbefore.
I can identify with the words so much, I want to scream at past injustices, plead that the person he's singing about understand that a sadness this deep is unbearable to live with. With this song, I've found that John Mayer is a lyrical genius. The last lyrics of the song touch me most - I've hit my threshold by that point - but I can't seem to release this pent up emotional energy. I won't do them any injustice by putting them on a screen, or on paper. Unaccompanied by the melody, the words are lifeless.
When John isn't singing, I feel this vibration that oscillates from my head to my toes.
What's interesting to me is that it isn't just the words. It's the music. It sounds like the melody, the instruments, the music itself - is
crying
. It hurts. The vibration of the music is a lament, accosting a different sense besides hearing - feeling. It feels like every pore of me is trying to express itself in ways they're not capable of. Have you ever felt that your body wanted to cry? Your heart hurts, and you cry. Your head hurts, and you cry. But does your body itself ever want to cry?
My heart, my head, and my body are all fighting for a release they can't achieve. I'm incapable.
I've done this song an injustice because I'm not able to sincerely express what I'm feeling.
My TiVo records anything John Mayer is a part of. I've been to one of his concerts. I have never heard him perform this song. Why? I think one of two things could be the reason for this.
1. He hates the song and wishes he neverwrote it
2. He loves the song too much to advertise its existence
Whatever the reason is, I think that I've found my absolute favorite song. If you ever find yourself hearing this song, close your eyes - avoid external stimuli. I find it's easiest to hear and feel the song if there aren't any distractions.
