Blog Entry 64 of 76 YourHub is a great forum
My wife says I have an opinion on everything. I guess that is correct as I possess what I call "McKnowledge": Knowing pretty much about a lot of things but not a lot about anything in particular. It is a type of surface knowledge learned as a salesman that allows me to converse with anybody from Snoop Dogg to George Will. It's fun but occasionally I have to get down and dirty and use that pesky "research" when I am writng a column since it is every columnist's nightmare to make an error. Short bio: I spent 4 years in the U. S. Air Force, graduated from the University of Central Missouri, had a career in sales that allowed me to move to Scottsdale, AZ in 1989. In 2004 I wrote a 7 part series on the history of television through the 1970's for TV TOME (now TV.com). I have done some TV ,radio, and public address work and write columns and blogs for the SCOTTSDALE REPUBLIC section of THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC and the NORTH SCOTTSDALE INDEPENDENT. I enjoy doing blogs and stories for YourHub in the ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS.

California approves gay marriage
Contributed by: Jim McAllister   on 5/20/2008

So, California's Supreme Court has passed a law allowing gay marriage. This is sending a lot of people into shock but I don't see why. There are already 108,000 gay households in that state and this isn't the first attempt to get such a law passed. It was a bit of a surprise, however, since the court is Republican dominated. The law passed by a 4-3 margin.

I don't think it is that big a deal. There is going to be a vote this fall on the subject and it may get reversed anyway. But, even if the ruling stands, so what? It's California, for God's sake, that stuff happens out there. Since there are already 108,000 gay households, I would say that gay people are pretty sincere about their feelings for one another. Did you see the pictures of the couples celebrating the decision? Some have been together a LONG time which tells me these are not just degenerate relationships. Let them get married if it's a big deal to them.

I have never believed that being gay is strictly a choice. I think that in most cases it is innate from birth. If it wasn't, would gay people tolerate the abuse they have taken over the years? I think most of them would have put forth an effort to be straight just to avoid the hassle and ridicule that comes with being gay. But they don't because they can't. They are what they are the same as straight people are what they are.

The anti-gay forces will now go to work to try to reverse this decision. They may have some success in delaying it but they will never fully reverse it. Hey! It's California! They will now join Massachusetts as the only states that allow gay marriage. It won't be long before it is the law everywhere. When I lived in Missouri in the 1960s, interracial marriages were illegal. Now they are common as will gay marriages become. It used to be considered horrific if a couple had a child out of wedlock. Today it is a routine way of life. Times are changing.

As for me, I will continue to be old fashioned and retain my love for women. As my wife has always told me: "Ya gotta do what ya gotta do."

Lisa, many traditions we knew are disappearing. I remember when a girl who was pregnant out of wedlock was sent to the "home for unwed mothers" where she had the baby which was then put up for adoption. It was "hush-hush" when that happened and the girl's absence was kept quiet. Now, children out of wedlock are a daily and publicized occurance. Many people have families and never get married. Gay marriage will eventully have the same identification. I don't know if it is good or bad but I admit, I am more of a traditionalist on this stuff. To each his own I guess.

I predict the elastic definition of marriage is going to change it more than expected, with a high toll on traditions of all kinds.
