Florence Gilbert prompts this Valentines thought
Contributed by: Mike Woodson   on 2/14/2006

When I see what her family wrote about her, what a wonderful woman.

I remember the ancient world's essentials about honoring women both in Greek and Hebrew life, the most fundamental laws all believed to be from God. Honor and love women.

Whatever we lack, as women or men, is the root cause of social responsibility. For if we lacked nothing, all of us would be self-sufficient and entropy would not do what it does to us, nor gravity, nor the aging gene-blueprint and all of the other known and unknowns effecting mortality and imperfection. And so, responsibility is to all for all, because no one can trace it all in perfect degrees.

Moms, you've got the most specialized, varied, powerful and blessed work on the globe. That every soul here on earth was contained in our women, who fed, protected, and bore the pain for us and continued on loving us despite all of the hardships imposed upon them, puts our societal treatment of women in perspective. Only mothers know this special walk that they walk. The rest of us must guess at how it is, and honor and love them. And if we're blessed, grace will flow from the women in our lives as it did from
Florence Gilbert.

"Honor thy mother" is an eternal life line. "Love thy wife" becomes the family's cornerstone. "Judge not" and "love they neighbor," makes the two compatible. The Greeks were wise. God chose the woman as a pure path into the world, and we men are men by measurement of our strength, action, love and protection for the women we belong to, and of our society's women in general. Were this not the way of it, the human race would have died out already. To the extent that women are today dishonored or not loved, we destroy the human race. Men who dishonor women destroy themselves ultimately. It is against all laws to disrespect the one who fed you, and the one who feeds your children with love, care, devotion and that unique role of being a woman.

Anyone disagreeing with me only needs to visit bachelor apartments everywhere and inspect them for signs of life. Then you will drop your arguments against the absolute truths I have merely restated above.

From the top executive of a company, to every cubicle dwelling employee, to every pick swinging laborer, to every backhoe operating person, to the lawyers, the doctors, the soldiers, the politicians, the investors, and to every man: "Honor thy mother," and "Love thy wife." Do this right and respect follows almost always, and children have the most powerful shelter above them: love that is mutually reinforced in deed and word. If we honor and love our women truly, and we do not receive respect, we must see it as something only possible for having fallen back in these virtues in the past. Today's reality is yesterday's farming practice.

With every word, every thought, every action, every idea, every decision, and every stroke of the pen, men should honor, protect and love the women among us. Think of how far we have come from that, then how great it would be to improve daily toward the ideal.

For those who talk about feminism as the cause of this or that bad effect in society, had the woman had the honor, love and protection due her for all that she has done for us, there would be no need for protest, revolutionary feminist ideologies or equal pay campaigns.

It all began with pride without respect to gender, provoking women, and provoking men. Like fire burns a house down, so pride provokes, divides and destroys homes without fail. Mutual humility builds, strengthens, insulates and proofs homes.
