Blog Entry 204 of 342 Father Knows... Something. Let's figure out what.
This is my outlet to share with the world all the things I've learned - and continue to learn - about being the Father to 3 young children. But I should warn you that my experience is probably NOT yours: my wife and I adopted a sibling set of 3 - all 6 years old and younger - while in our 40's. We've heard that, "it keeps you young," but so far, it has mostly kept us tired... But like any parent, our kids teach us something new every day and I hope to share at least something here with you as I can. The entries will be short - time constraints will probably keep it at or around a mere 200-400 words - but as they say, brevity is the soul of wit. Let's hope I can create some brevity here. So if you read something you like, please leave a comment. If you read something you don't, please just leave. (Just kidding - I'd love to hear from critics as well.)

The graceful dance
Contributed by: Chris Stone   on 8/29/2007

Knowing that kids were on their way into my home changed almost everything about how I thought about almost everything. I think I've mentioned before that one of the more memorable episodes involved me frying bacon when I suddenly thought, "this is going to double in both volume and time. That's a big change."

Well, it turns out that it was a big change because we started buying pre-cooked bacon in bulk: 6 pounds at a time. In terms of time, mess and storage it was one of the best decisions we've come to, frankly.

So that's one change I foresaw (kinda). There have been plenty of others in that same category as well as some that completely came at me from left field. One from the latter category is ballet.

Yes. Ballet. I mean, from the time I even suspected little girls might co-inhabit my space I knew things would become roughly 82% more frilly and the quantity of pink would at least quadruple. Such is their way (generally speaking). But ballet? Who knew?

Obviously, I should have, and now it descends upon me almost nightly; "M" dresses in her "ballerina" outfits and flits through our living space as often as not. Sometimes she's a performer and sometimes she's a teacher and sometimes she's just a ballerina gracefully prancing through life.

But I know for certain which sport she will request to be signed up for in the coming years. The good news is that I have deeply-rooted memories of much ot the traditional music they use. The bad news is that - duh - it's ballet.

And I'll be there for each and every performance...

Chris Stone is a slightly different - hopefully better - Father and man than he was yesterday...
