How many of you have dealt with the following scenario? You have a cold, sore throat or allergy problem, or possibly an eye infection, skin condition or minor injury. You are in pain so you call your primary care physician and are told he/she can see you in two weeks at 1:00 p.m, which will probably be 3:00 p.m., on a Wednesday. Besides that, a visit to his/her office is going to cost you about $130.
Welcome to the wonderful world of medicine in the United States. Fortunately, a new and less expensive concept is making its way across the country to help relieve the angst of minor ailments. It is the in-store clinic that is designed to quickly and inexpensively handle your problem. At the moment, there are about 300 of these places located around the U. S. and are usually located in retail stores like Walgreens, CVS, Wal-Mart and Target. Because of their popularity, 700 more are expected to open this year.
In Colorado, the first clinics have been installed inside some Wal-Mart stores. Wal-Mart is working in conjunction with SmartCare Clinics of Greenwood Village and so far have opened 15 clinics in the Denver area and northern Colorado. They are staffed by nurse practioners who are authorized to write prescriptions and they have access to a physician on call. The average cost per visit can vary but is usually in the $50 to $60 range.
Please remember these clinics are for the convenient treatment of minor ailments. Broken bones, severe burns, chest pains, and chronic conditions are not within their scope. They also should not be considered as a "medical home." That is still the job of the primary physician.
With 47 million Americans not having health insurance, the in-store clinic offers a low cost and rapid method of at least minor medical care. With their initial popularity, look for one in your neighborhood soon.
