If the shoe fits/Outsourcing
Contributed by: Delmar Knudson   on 8/20/2007

After 30 years of walking the halls and standing for long hours doing "surgical" procedures, and having aching feet at the end of every day, I discovered Rockport shoes. For the first time my feet didn't ache at the end of the day. Some styles of their shoes keep the feet somewhat too warm, but the tradeoff was well worth it.

Then, a few years ago, I tried on 3 sets of Rockports in three different stores. These were the identical same models. I found that, depending upon which country they were imported from that different sizes fit my feet (each a 1/2 size different). That is, like one was a 9 & 1/2, and another was a 10, and the third was a 10 & 1/2.

These perfectly fitting shoes (but labeled with 3 different sizes) came from 3 different countries. One was from Mexico. The ones I am wearing were from Indonesia; and I think the third was from Malaysia.

So, I wonder if it isn't inherently more difficult to control quality in distant countries than in one's own country? The shoes were probably all very durable, and would have been kind to my feet (as the Indonesian ones I chose have been). Who would think that actually the size would need to be carefully monitored?

I have never had any similar experience upon buying from a reliable company of good reputation, such as Rockport, when the clothing or whatever was the same exact style, etc. when they were all manufactured in the U.S.A.
