Blog Entry 13 of 149 Bad Mom
I call myself Bad Mom because at the time I came up with it, I was learning about the assumptions we put behind our words. I was following the pattern of not believing that my kids are okay, and speaking to them from that basis. I changed that, and it made a big difference. I am from Utah and my people are still living there. My husband was in the Air Force and we rattled around until we saw Colorado, and we stuck.

Weight Loss--the 20 Year Plan
Contributed by: Lisa Arata   on 10/8/2007

Here are the steps in loose order:

1. When you catch yourself eating something and going, "I shouldn't eat this," then just as soon as you can, throw the rest of it away. Don't do it in a punitive manner. You weren't being bad. You can choose either way, that's all.

2. Get more sleep time. If something is interfering with your sleep, such as alcohol, caffeine or too much carb with dinner, then as soon as you feel able, fix it for a few days and you'll gradually improve your sleep. Your stress level will go down and you'll feel more emotionally capable of changing.

3. Don't put yourself on a workout program you're only going to quit. Instead, walk in the sunshine and do things with an intrinsic good feeling. You'll want to do them more often.

4. Get your EFA's. Fish oil with EPA and DHA, Omega 3 and -6 fatty acids. I think people crave fats because their body is asking for healthy fatty acids and instead it's getting trans-fats. When you get the EFA's you crave less.

5. Eat more of the vegetables you like. Double them. Then try new ones.

6. Eat less of the carbs you like. Stop eating them when they lose that yummy edge.

7. Number one eating tip: Do something fulfilling in life that gives you a better feeling than eating does. For me it's writing. I get into an emotional world and I don't reach for food.

Have I lost weight? Well I've settled at a hefty but stable weight and I'm feelin' fine. Feet stopped aching. Knees not hurting. Can I do better? Yah. But no more masochistic self-loathing.
