There is hope for fetal distress syndrome
Contributed by: Liz Easterly   on 5/5/2008

Twenty percent of all pregnancies in the United States will be diagnosed with some type of fetal distress syndrome, which can cause birth defects, premature birth, or loss of the fetus. Gestational diabetes and pre-eclampsia, two common pregnancy problems, are major causes of fetal distress syndrome.

30-40 percent of those problems can be eliminated simply by moms remaining healthy during their pregnancies.

Our Charity Partner, Fetal Hope Foundation, tries to help raise awareness among doctors and mothers about how to prevent and treat the problems arising from fetal distress syndrome -- and that includes raising awareness of childhood obesity, the focus of our kids' race, the Marathon Milers One-Mile Fun Run on Saturday, May 17th at 10:00 am.

"Our kids will be the first generation whose life expectancy is lower than their parents," said Lonnie Sommers, Executive Director of Fetal Hope Foundation. "Childhood obesity is an epidemic. Our kids are starting out disadvantaged."

Fetal Hope has one of the most diverse medical boards in the country, educating doctors on a wide spectrum of fetal distress syndromes.

They've got several relay teams running the Colfax this year.

Look for them at the Sports & Fitness Expo!
