Blog Entry 65 of 66 Bad Mom
I call myself Bad Mom because at the time I came up with it, I was learning about the assumptions we put behind our words. I was following the pattern of not believing that my kids are okay, and speaking to them from that basis. I changed that, and it made a big difference. I am from Utah and my people are still living there. My husband was in the Air Force and we rattled around until we saw Colorado, and we stuck.

My Friend Christine
Contributed by: Lisa Arata   on 4/21/2008

Without getting too divulgent about her, I'll tell you about my friend Christine Stoffer, the one I took the road trip with.

She was the oldest child in a family of six kids. Her dad was often unemployed, sometimes alcoholic and sometimes a religious fanatic. Her mom wasn't all there mentally. They moved around all over California every few years, and the only stable relationship she had was with her grandma.

She was in a good high school, when her parents uprooted the family one time too many. She didn't want to go to another school, so she dropped out. She had a friend whose family ran some sort of a hotel in Mexico. She went and worked and hung out there, and finally went home.

There, she met a man 31 years old, who wooed her and took her to church. Then he married her and again she was living in Mexico, helping out in some kind of a cooperative farm. He wouldn't let her get a driver's license or a phone. She was about to leave him when she found out she was pregnant, so she had to stay with him. She had Mandy and David. Ten years later there was a divorce and custody battle.

When I met her she was dating a guy we both ended up dating. I think I've written about him before. He was loveable but sanity-destroying. After I dumped him, she and I stayed friends after that. She met a super-nice guy named Doug, a photographer for Morton-Thiokol, makers of the Challenger rockets. I remember her getting her GED, wondering if she was going to screw it up. But she passed.

I was in college when the Challenger disaster happened. Doug got laid off. She and Doug moved to Florida, and I didn't see her for a long time.

Now she's got a BA in social work but is looking to go get a teaching certificate. She's always making good choices, I think.

On our road trip, we got along great and didn't get on one another's nerves like I thought might happen. It was easy as pie. Well, she drove in the left lane too much...I didn't say anything because it wasn't hurting anything, really. I hope I didn't bug her with my driving advice or my excessive eating.

It was a joyful week for me. I flew to Huntsville, AL and we drove down to Pensacola FL, then Appalachicola, then St. Augustine, Waycross GA, Auburn AL and back up to Huntsville.

I'll put in a photo.

All that is really required of a crew person on my roadtrips is that they don't look down at me when I crack that 8 a.m. beer. Really, that's it. (Good blog Lisa)
