Blog Entry 12 of 29 You call this work?
I'm a community journalist for Denver, South Denver and Glendale here at YourHub.com. I'll write here occasionally about fun stuff I do around the city, life here at YourHub.com world headquarters, my cat and dog, movies, television and the occasional domestic rant. You will most likely find me blogging when I'm on deadline and should probably be doing more urgent things.

Welcome to the world!

This past weekend was an exciting one for my group of friends.

Our friend Julia's water broke Friday night while several people were over putting finishing touches on the baby's nursery. Once that happened, I think we all walked that fine line of wanting to know what's happening and also trying to respect a couple's privacy during the momentous occasion of the birth of their first child. So, we waited...

By Sunday there was still no news. My hubby and I went snowshoeing that day, and all I could think about as I crunched through the melting snow was whether the baby had come. Is he healthy? Is he cute? Is it possible that Julia and Keith are still awake? How is childbirth physically possible? When will I get to hold the baby?

Our phone rang at 4:30 that afternoon. Baby Leif had been born at 2:30. Eight pounds, four ounces. Ten fingers. Ten toes. Whew! It's so amazing that he's here. After so many months of watching Julia's belly grow, it still seems like a shock that the baby is out in the world now.

Birth announcements used to be a staple in newspapers. And I understand why. There is hardly anything more exciting in the world than the birth of a baby. But newspapers have started charging for this service. The Rocky Mountain News and the Denver Post charge $160 for the smallest announcement size and charge extra if you want it to run online.

Birth announcements on YourHub.com are free and there is no limit to how much you write or how many photos you post. To post one, click here. If you post a birth announcement on YourHub.com, the story is online immediately, meaning you can send links to all your over-excited friends and relatives right away. Then we'll consider the posting for our print edition so you can cut the story out and paste it into the baby book. That is, after you get some sleep.
