I confess.
This week, I have been addicted to something completely unwholesome, gratuitous and dysfunctional.
Yes, one of my roommates brought home Nip/Tuck Season 3.
(Season 4 will be unleashed on the world Sept. 4. Spare us all.)
Episode one horrified me with its complete excess. Yet I could not nip or tuck myself away from the screen, and with the moral wherewithal of a cocaine addict, I watched.
I cannot say I was particularly edified.
Nevertheless, amid the circus of trysts, boob jobs and bare-naked violence, the disastrous relationships compiled into a neat check-list of do-nots.
From the bad examples prancing scantily across the TV, I was reminded to:
Forgive.
For goodness sakes, so many of the problems could be solved were the characters simply to let go of their bitterness and resentment.
Unfortunately, heart-burning ill will does not limit itself to teledramas.
It's easy to see TV characters butcher their lives by harboring it. It's tougher to see the scars we wreak on our own relationships.
Consider it preventive surgery.
(Otherwise, clearly the object of our hatred could a gory death, as illustrated, in a plane crash or serial murder.)
Avoid infidelity.
(Especially with your significant other's BF.) (Even if he's hot.) (Does this really need more explanation?)
Finish med school.
Characters embroil themselves in regrets when they reluctantly surrender their dreams for the overall good of the relationship.
Don't get me wrong- sacrifice is good. But make sure you offer your significant other a fulfilled, complete person. Otherwise, you'll look back wistfully and maybe open a spa.
Treat others' insecurities with compassion.
Not everyone can have a 33-inch man waist.
... I could go on and on.
But the most importantly, I learned:
Nip/Tuck is a bad blueprint for relationships.
And finally:
If you're wise, you won't watch one episode. Because if you give a mouse a cookie or an insecure girl an implant...
