Sweet nothings in my phone
Contributed by: Jillian Melchior   on 8/23/2007

I received a gift that actually cost me about five cents. It's a text message from my boyfriend.

These text messages are among the best gifts he's ever given me.

They're cheap, but I treasure them. Think of it as a digital bouquet, I guess.

Usually, text messaging frustrates me. When people try to hold a conversation through grammatically incorrect, all lowercase incomplete texted sentences, I nearly die.

Why are they so lazy, I wonder, that they cannot call me or at least have the decency to punctuate?

Then I realize it's probably because they're driving.

My boyfriend's text messages are different.

They're pithy little expressions of affection sent via satellite that delight me when I find my phone in the abyss of my purse.

Every once in a while, he surprised me with them, and they made me so happy that, despite my disdain for sentimentalism, I began saving them.

Last fall, I got a new phone. By this summer, I had about 40 my favorite text messages in my telephone piggy bank.

When I was sad or bored, I'd scroll through and find myself smiling.

Then one day, disaster struck.

I tried to delete a random message, but my selection tool strayed from "erase" to "erase all." Before I could stop myself, my finger hit the button, sending my collection of tenderness to oblivion.

I'm ashamed to say I nearly wept. But after all, these weren't just text messages. They may as well have been perfumed (or cologned) letters tied with a blue ribbon, just like in classically romantic affairs.

I wondered why I was so upset about losing them.

I guess it's true despite being cliche: Maybe the best gifts are free.

Men could benefit from learning that a simple expression of fondness may be more precious to a girl than an expensive- but emotionally shallow- night out.

Women want men to appeal to their inner romantic. Admit it or not.

Maybe a really good text message is the five-cent equivalent of a long walk on the beach or a candlelight dinner.

So since my tragic text message loss in July, my boyfriend has been working to replenish my supply of cell phone glee.

This morning, to my delight, I received another one. My phone alerted me my text message box was 84 percent full- that's about $6 between the two of us, sending and receiving costs.

But it's about a million dollars in dating currency, and I'm a pretty lucky girl.

I'm hard-wired to use proper punctuation, including the apostrophe (all you have to do is hit the '1' key nine times) which my teenage sister is keen to point out every time I send her a message.

John, you're not weird. But my txt mssgs r of10 abbrviated cuz I do2many things at a time ... I hang on to things like e-mails and text messages from my dearheart, too. I can understand the heartache you must've felt when you accidentally erased yours. One sweet thing Alex has done for me is he bought me one of my favorite cereals so that I'll always have something to eat for breakfast when I'm in Denver .... awww ....

My world isn't complete til Bill adds "Do You Think I'm Sexy" to the list. Also... I spell correctly, capitalize and use proper punctuation (such as one can do without an apostrophe) in text messages. Does that make me weird?

Sometimes, I call home when I know Judy isn't there and sing her love songs on the voice mail. You know, stuff like "Feel like makin love". That's a love song, right?

Jillian, I really loved this blog. My husband of 35 years surprises me with really sweet favors. One time, on my 2nd day at a job that I purely hated, I found him parked in his car next to mine when I came out for lunch, and he had a picnic set up for us to share. I'll never forget his thoughtfullness. Just one of many things he does that is so special. And you know what, his actions have taught our adult boys how to treat a lady. That is a gift in itself.

I only recently realized she was doing this (color me THICK!) Whenever I tell my wife about a new book I'd like to read, I'll arrive home from work some day and find said book on the table. Also, recently during a particularly trying time in my life, she said, "By the way, I invited Dave (my best friend for 20 years) over Saturday so you guys can watch the game and tell your old Navy stories. Oh, and I bought some beer." I don't know why she keeps me, but I'm glad!
