If you're not Outraged-You're not paying attention
Musings about life, love, dating, growing old, politics, and who knows what else. I will often rant about stupidity and the vagaries of the world.

The other day I was working my way towards the front of the grocery store, up and down the aisles, in no particular hurry. I noticed several different women as our paths crossed again and again. Whenever they made eye contact, I smiled, most of them smiled back. Pretty eyes, a nicely shaped mouth, an overweight woman with a beautiful smile. A flirtatious teenage girl, scantily dressed, all but winking at me behind her mothers back.
Brad Pitt I'm not. I never was. I have no illusions about my desirability. But I have always enjoyed this "flirting game" we play in public. At 53, with three divorces under my ample belt, I have all but given up on romance. Although a smile from an attractive woman can make my entire day. I know that a smile is not an indication of interest. Most women have been trained to smile all the time. If I were to attempt to seriously try to ask that same woman out, I find I am suddenly a socially awkward 15 year old again.
I don't have any trouble engaging women in conversation and often do. A question or outrageous comment can often spark a conversation. If I can make a woman laugh or walk away smiling it is a small conquest. I have perfected a detached non committal ability to chat with even the most beautiful women. After all there is no risk of rejection since I was never in the running.
So there I am finally at the checkout when one of the women, an attractive blonde in her mid thirties?, pulls in behind me. I look up and smile and she tells me that she is not following me. I laugh and we talk about nothing in particular while we wait in line for the slowest checker on the planet. When she tells me she works at the Greeley hospital, I regale her with my recent trip to the emergency room. She has just gotten off work and is doing her weekly grocery shopping.
She tells me she is divorced, that her son is grown, and she comments on what a nice afternoon it is. Warm and sunny. Great weather for a walk.
I live an hour away from Greeley and I am thinking of the long drive home ahead of me, that by the time I get home and unload my groceries it will certainly be dark. I reply that it will be too dark for me to go for a walk after I get home. We talk some more as I finally get checked out. As I turn to leave I tell her how much I enjoyed chatting with her and tell her my name is David. Her name is Debbie.
As I drive away, I realize that she mentioned going for a walk at least 3 times...I know that she is divorced for 7 years and not in a relationship, her son is grown and I am pretty sure she lives alone, she touched my arm more than once during our chat, she laughed at my stupid jokes, smiled and maintained eye contact with me. She told me her plans for that Friday evening were cleaning her house, which is the same as having no plans.
Was she trying to tell me something? Am I clueless? This is the downside of a solid defense mechanism. And a conundrum. While talking to her it never occurred to me that she might want me to join her on her walk. And I am not sure she did. By excluding such possibilities from my mind I am able to be comfortable, relaxed, and confident enough to carry on the conversation in the first place. A conversation which may hold the potential for more but which never has the chance.
Did she need a 2x4 to get my attention? Did she want to? She may have thought she was being very overt but to me it was very subtle. I guess I just need a woman to wave a large flag in my face.

She was definitely looking for more than a way to pass time in the check-out line. I should do more shopping!

Yes! David...get back to that grocery store next week and see if she's there. Now I know why flirting in the grocery store doesn't work...men are clueless (hehe) - thanks for the chuckle.
