Blog Entry 42 of 149 Bad Mom
I call myself Bad Mom because at the time I came up with it, I was learning about the assumptions we put behind our words. I was following the pattern of not believing that my kids are okay, and speaking to them from that basis. I changed that, and it made a big difference. I am from Utah and my people are still living there. My husband was in the Air Force and we rattled around until we saw Colorado, and we stuck.

Lack of Feeling about Christmas
Contributed by: Lisa Arata   on 12/7/2007

Sometimes I want to feel something and I just can't.

Like, I want to feel the Christmas spirit, but I don't.

Perhaps what I need to do us ignore Christmas, and celebrate something I really do feel something about, which is the December solstice.

I like the morning of December 22nd, when I know that the sun is rising a minute earlier than it did yesterday. It gives me optimism and inner light.

And so, until then I think the wise way to live is to go out and, trusting my kids to know what they want, and believing in their wishes, buy them the video game and the kind of music they want.

I just asked my husband what he wants, and he says he doesn't know.

I want a gem. It's not something I need. It's just...that's what would give me that magical feeling of Christmas, I guess.

And I want for my husband to want something. And get it.

I don't believe in what they say about Christmas, but I suppose in a sense I am aware of a certain sparkle that is there in the heart.

I wish for some of it for Richard.

Gifts come in many forms.........it's about the giving. That's the part that feels good!

Good perspective. Also, in the paper today, Garrison Keillor's column is good. If I could clarify something it would be that the gift thing is more about the hope and the wishes than the actual gift. I know my kids don't need another game and I don't need anything. We're going to make cookies and spiced nuts and cute containers. But see, if Christmas isn't about gifts, then why do people insist on giving them? There must be something to that.

Gifts cannot bring happiness Lisa, only the real reason for Christmas, the Savior. I hope you and your family have a happy holiday.

I want only another year of good health, for me and everyone I know. My friend and his wife celebrate the solstice instead of Christmas. He is an English professor in Michigan. Pagan? Who cares. Materialism won't give you that magical feeling, I believe. Relax, blow off the gift thing (unless it's homemade) and give/take the love. That's my hard won theory.
