Death, 21st birthdays and a wrinkle

I recently realized I will get old.

Call it naive, but I didn't see it coming.

Just a year ago, a fifty-something asked me at what age I thought people were finally old.

"Not 'till you're on life support," my barely twenty-something self replied.

And then it happened: I turned 21.

"Your childhood is officially over," my dad wrote in his birthday note.

With a gasp, I realized he was right, and with it ends birthdays where I get something as a reward for age.

Look at it this way: When you're 16, the Department of Transportation unleashes you and a propulsory weapon on a world full of other drivers.

When you're 18, parental reign is over. You can eat as many cookies from the jar as you want, and there are absolutely no consequences.

When you're 21, you can get trashed in front of a policeman and not get in trouble. If you wanted to, for some reason.

My 21st birthday passed with champagne-infused glory, and the next morning, instead of waking up with a hangover, I woke up with the realization that the end had begun.

After all, the next prize of age is getting to run for Congress or president- neither likely endeavors.

I've contemplated the implications.

I guess this means I'm one step closer to death, though I suppose I could have choked on a Cheerio or plummeted to my sorry death in a see-saw mishap years ago.

But it's not all bad. Turns out grownups have all the fun anyway.

As a kid, you just pretend to do legendary things. But as an adult, you can cavort around the world and tackle real adventures. Or, at least, you can stay up past eight.

But age means more knowledge, more money, more experiences, more opportunities- more everything really. I think I like getting old.

Until then, I'm lathering on the sun screen and bronco-riding my life to its fullest potential.

hahaha... 21? I'm 46.. talk about realizing what age is... You know.. we were all 21 once.. I'm so glad I'm not that young and naive anymore...There is something to having true wisdom from experience...

You think you like getting old? What's the alternative? You don't have much choice in this, do you. Its not necessarily getting old that bites the hardest. If you don't take care of yourself and prepare for the day your cellulite gets worse, your face drops, you no longer hear whistles, and your significant other drops you like a hot potato for a younger person, you will be in big, big trouble.

After 21 you quit keeping track until you hit 30 then you stop keeping track again. I think I'm some where between 34 and 37 right now.

21 just means you can now do WHATEVER, WHENEVER (within bounds). At 49, life feels like it is just beginning for me (though my joints complain and I have a hard time staying up past 8). Happy Birthday and how are the colors back home? I grew up in mid-Michigan.

It's OK, Jillian. When I turned 20, I ran into a "life-crisis" as I realized I was no longer in my teens and growing "older." I've had a panic attack every birthday since.
