Blog Entry 7 of 29 You call this work?
I'm a community journalist for Denver, South Denver and Glendale here at YourHub.com. I'll write here occasionally about fun stuff I do around the city, life here at YourHub.com world headquarters, my cat and dog, movies, television and the occasional domestic rant. You will most likely find me blogging when I'm on deadline and should probably be doing more urgent things.

Why Hot Sulphur Springs rocks my world
Contributed by: Annie Hundley   on 3/30/2006

My husband, chihuahua and I got away for the weekend for a two-night respite in Hot Sulphur Springs. My husband's grandparents own a cabin in this tiny mountain town, which means that if you're willing to buy a case of Coors Light to replenish the fridge, you've got yourself a free weekend getaway.

I've decided that Hot Sulphur is perhaps the best Colorado mountain town for a getaway. No, not for a ski vacation or for a binge-drinking, club-hopping jaunt (you probably want to hit Vail or Aspen for those), but for a no-you-can't-find-me, yes-I'm-sleeping-all-weekend escape.

The cabin has no phone, no cable, no Internet. Up until this year you had to drive to Granby for cell service. Then there was that hilarious incident where we tried driving up to the cemetery above town one November to make cell calls. Silly city folks. We're better behaved now. A cell tower now looms over Hot Suphur from a nearby hill so the universe was wise and made sure we forgot the cell phone's charger this weekend.

We are still identifiable as city folks in Hot Sulphur by our canine, who requires several layers of clothing in this snowy weather. Saturday afternoon we walked Pepe around a few "blocks" "downtown." While he pranced around in his sporty red and blue vest, a pit bull tethered to a trailer by a rope growled at what I'm sure he hoped would be a snack. In Denver Pepe's regular dog encounters feature poodles and the like.

This is why Hot Sulphur rocks. It's a place to go to think about what's important in life: heat, food and good company ... not getting eaten by animals larger than you. It is not a place to eat foie gras or shop for fur coats. If you go to the local bar, you're getting shots of whiskey and beer chasers. If you even mention a cosmopolitan, I'm pretty sure you'd be escorted up the road to Steamboat Springs.

The general store in Hot Sulphur is called the Four B's. That stands for beer, bread, bait and bullets. Ahhhh ... the simple life.
