HubCap: Not everybody is Jack Elway
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 9/5/2006

Do daily newspapers and television stations send reporters and photographers to your kid's high school games, meets and tournaments? Do commentators watch your kids' every move in every game and speculate on what the future holds for their athletic career?

They do if your kid's last name is Elway.

But if you're reading this, and you live in the Denver/Boulder metro area, the odds are pretty good that it's not. And although the big newspapers in this city devote a lot of resources to covering high school sports, we know they've got a few holes in their game -- they don't promise to get action photos of your kid's team in the paper every week (neither do we, but if you provide the photos, let's be honest: You've got a pretty good shot at it).

And we don't care if the rest of the local media is callingyour kid's next game "the most anticipated matchup of the season" or not. If it's a source of conversation at your dinner table, it's news.

We've had a couple parents step up and fill the void left by the "real" media here at YourHub.com. Do they know as much about high school sports as paid "sports reporters"? We'd like to think so, considering they probably know what at least one of the players had for breakfast this morning (and their grades in all their classes). Are they biased? Well, probably.

Stories posted by these parents landed in our Thursday print section delivered with the Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post every Thursday.

Janet Newman, of Arvada, has posted quite a few stories about Pomona High School's cross-country team. Heck, she's attending the meets anyway, and has her camera with her. Here's her article on Pomona's first meet this season, and here's her portfolio of YourHub.com stories.

Mike McNierney, of Lafayette, set out last football season to get some press for the Centaurus JVC team. He teamed up with shutterbug Ronald Nutt, also of Lafayette, (who also covered Centaurus' varsity football team) and provided coverage of the team all season. Note: If you want to post a story about your kid's team, you don't have to have 28 photos to accompany it, and they don't have to be as high-quality as Ronald Nutt's photos. A few photos are nice, however.

Donna Feldman, of Louisville, kept us up on the Monarch High School Girls Soccer season last year, complete with photos from David Heitman, proving that you don't even have to bring a camera to the game -- you just have to find someone with a camera and make arrangements for them to get you the photos they take (especially the ones with your kid in them).

We don't expect every YourHub.com posterto be a great sports photographer. Our own community journalist Eric Lubbers proved in this blog that he doesn't always nail it when taking photos at a sporting event. He did catch a few good ones, though.

There are more kids working hard out there besides Jack Elway. Get them some press.

Everybody deserves press. I'm sure if you ask Jack, he'd just as soon do with less scrutiny. It's a good thing, though, anytime we can give the not-so-famous kid some press.
