Food review: Skippy Reduced Fat Peanut Butter
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 9/14/2006

I eat a peanut-butter and banana sandwich every day as part of the two-hour ritual that is my desktop lunch. Every day. That means I eat a lot of peanut butter. I usually buy the four-pound jars of Skippy or the four-pound can of JIF (King Soopers puts the price per ounce on every product, and when I stand there looking at the peanut butter, the math says I'd be a fool not to.)

I know peanut butter contains a lot of sugar, and sometimes I buy the organic peanut butter that's made of just peanuts and salt. It's kind of a shock that it's so plain and salty, but the taste isn't all that bad. Especially now that they've made a version you don't have to stir.

Last Sunday, I was apparently not paying attention when picking out my groceries, and when I got home, I found I had actually paid money for a jar of Skippy Reduced Fat Peanut Butter. I had accidentally done this before, about six years ago, and found the product I had purchased would have been better named "Bread Ripper," for the effect it had when one tried to spread it on a piece of bread.

I was surprised at how smoothly the new (?) Skippy Reduced Fat spread onto the bread yesterday when I made my customary sandwich. Wow, I thought, Skippy has made some improvements to its formula.

Not so, I found out when I took my first bite of the sandwich yesterday at noon. Skippy Reduced Fat has something in it that makes it a little sweeter, and a lot more suckier. Thankfully, I was so busy at my desk yesterday, I was able to choke the sandwich down.

This morning, I figured I'd give it another shot, and I made myself another sandwich. Ten minutes ago, I ate about half that sandwich. I cannot eat this "peanut butter" anymore.

Skippy, you have ruined my day. However, I will continue to buy your All-American, Regular-Amount-of-Fat Peanut Butter. Thanks for giving it a shot, I guess, but maybe we're barking up the wrong tree here? I mean, maybe you could wait until someone genetically engineers reduced-fat peanuts first?

I'm a peanut butter lover myself, and I gotta tell ya, I'm always bummed when I accidently grab the reduced fat jar. Brendan, I'm glad you pointed out the uselessness of this shameful product. Now, if only someone would blog about the travesty that is fat-free mayonaise.

I think most reduced fat foods taste a lot more suckier.

I get mine from a lady who hoists it from a food bank. No label but I think it's peanut butter. Well, it looks like peanut butter and tastes like peanut butter and I can't beat the price.
