Review: Little India

I am not a restaurant reviewer -- I do not spend minutes pondering what spices make up a unique dish's flavor, nor do I care when my salad plate is too warm. Further handicapping my expertise is the fact that I'm a vegetarian, which makes me unable to sample about 70 to 90 percent of any given restaurant's particular menu. However, I know when food and service sucks, so although I can't tell you a good steakhouse or barbecue joint, I can kind of steer you in the right direction food- and atmosphere-wise.

That said, my professional opinion is dude, Little India is a pretty sweet place to eat.

My girlfriend, Emily, suggested we eat at Little India on Friday night. She also suggested she pay for dinner, which made it a pretty good deal overall from my point of view. So we headed to the Little India on Sixth Avenue (I didn't know there were three in Denver until later -- see end for other locations) after work.

There is no really great place to wait for a table, but we only waited for about 90 seconds until we were whisked to a table for two in the sun-porch side of the restaurant. Our server was quick to greet us, and our food arrived quickly as well. We had:

Brendan: Vegetable Curry (Mixed vegetables seasoned in a medium thick curry, $9.99)
Verdict: Excellent. Not too spicy, nice blend of vegetables.

Emily: Bombay Alu (Potatoes cooked with onion, tomato and spices, $9.99)
Verdict: Excellent as well. I could have easily switched plates with Emily and eaten hers. Nicely-sized chunks of potatoes.

Split an order of Paratha (Multilayered buttered, whole wheat bread, $2.50)
Verdict: Great, but we really didn't need to order bread on top of all the food.

My only gripe with Little India? Once all the food was on our two-person table, it was pretty cramped for space. That's really it. Also, someone should have forced me to try the Chai, because I now regret that I didn't.

That's where my wife and I went on our first date. MMMM>... Nice photo by the way. It makes me feel like I'm really in India.

Like Karen, I used to live within rock-throwing distance of the Little India on Downing Street and ate the chicken tikka masala almost once a week. But if we are to engage in open, honest debate about Indian restaurants, there is absolutely no challenging India's at Tamarac Square. It's a bit of a drive for us downtown-y folk, but a bite of saag paneer on their nan will make you forget any other restaurants even exist. And no, that's not hyperbole.

That Little India was where I introduced Damon to family friends. It was a good and delicious setting for that.

When I used to live near S. Downing St. I ate at the nearby Little India several times -- very, very good. Especially the alu naan.
