Parade of Lights a test for my toes, camera skills
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 12/3/2006

I'll be the first to admit that I suck at taking photos. That might be because most people don't walk around and say, "OK, you got me. I admit it -- Brendan Leonard sucks at taking photos." Also, I'm really bad at it. I don't know much about lighting, shutter speed, f-stops or anything else. Knowledge of how to operate a real camera eludes me like knowledge of how to get that "12:00" to stop flashing eluded most of us in the '80s and '90s.

But, there is a time for everyone to learn. My time was at 6 p.m. Dec. 2 at the Denver Parade of Lights. The Parade of Lights is a rather harsh time for anyone to learn photography, because:

1) It's at night.
2) You're taking pictures of things and people strung with holiday lights.
3) The people are moving.

Add to this the fact that it was about 15 degrees out, and the best spot left on Tremont Street between 15th and 16th streets, by the time we got there, was standing on a metal grate, and you've got a recipe for disaster.

My toes went numb pretty much right away, and my fingers just remained painfully cold most of the time, since I was wearing thin gloves that allowed me to still operate the camera buttons. I took 97 photos, not counting the ones I deleted from the camera memory on the spot because I knew right away they were horrible.

After reviewing all of them, I found 12 that were passable. I promise the St. Paddy's Day Parade coverage will be better.

Got photos from the Parade of Lights? Post them here.

So, is Jayson one of these friends you threatened to have find me if I didn't keep blogging? And, Sousaphone's are the ones that just wrap around your body, right? The ones that just sit on your shoulders are Tubas. By the way, the penguin picture is my fave!

"Marching tubas" are called sousaphones. I should know, I've taken three of the four coolest sousaphone pictures ever.

Zwick wants to call them Tubazookas, but according to the most basic of Internet searches, they are playing contrabass bugles, affectionately known as "Contras." *The more you know* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contrabass_Bugle
