Yeah, I didn't get that memo.

It's pretty hard to quantify how excited I was when I found out I was getting six tickets to Extreme Monster Truck Nationals at the National Western Event Center on Sunday night. My friend Jayson was in town, and whenever he's in town, a few of my old friends get together and try to show him a good time.

All day Sunday, and most of the day on Saturday, we talked about how awesome Monster Truck Nationals was going to be. 6 p.m. Sunday. I had six tickets, and six of us had hearts pumping adrenaline. A few marginal friends had to be told, No, sorry, we only have six tickets.

Raw power. Cars being crushed by giant tires. A donut contest. What more could you ask for? Jen brought six pairs of earplugs.

At 5:20 on Sunday, 40 minutes before the big show, we left my apartment in Capitol Hill and made the drive up Brighton Boulevard to the National Western Events Center, which is not in the most cheery of neighborhoods. The place looked deserted at 5:40. We drove around until we found the front of the Events Center, and found the parking lot all but empty, a few families walking out the front doors of the center.

Oh, no.

Jen had called at 12:30, saying she was looking at the National Western Events Center Web site, and the Web site said the show started at 2 p.m., not 6 p.m. like the ticket said. We had collectively decided that Nah, it starts at 6. Look at the tickets.

Six hearts dropped into six stomachs when we all realized the show had been over for at least an hour. We had missed Extreme Monster Truck Nationals.

I blurted out, "Well, Jayson's trip to Colorado was a complete waste, then," before I could think about what I was saying. But that's what everybody felt.

Then, as if on cue, a trailer carrying Sergeant Smash, big wheels removed for the ride to the next venue, drove right in front of our car at the T intersection, taking off. It was as if the circus was leaving town right before our eyes. You could almost hear the "wah, wah, wah" of a sad trumpet.

Well, at least the tickets were free promotional ones. If we had paid for them, I would have been really heartbroken.

Next time you're in town, Sergeant Smash, I'll be there four hours early, just in case.

Our out-of-town guest bought Broncos tickets for the Nov. 18 game on e-bay. The start time was listed on the ticket as 2:30. He had to change his flight home when he found out it started at 6 instead. Too bad your change made it earlier; nobody should miss Monster Trucks.
