Cold Sunday means short bike ride
Contributed by: Brendan Leonard/YourHub.com   on 12/17/2006

The first time I heard about Salvagetti Bicycle Workshop, it was from my friend Nick, who had been talking about buying a bike for the better part of a year. One night, after listening to Nick mull over bikes for hours on end, my girlfriend finally said, "You know what they're going to put on your tombstone, Nick?"

"What?"

"'He should have bought that bike.'"

The next day, Nick came over with a new black road bike with the name "Salvagetti" painted on the downtube. He explained that there was this guy who bought or otherwise found old steel bike frames, stripped them, repainted them and put all new components and wheels on them, then sold them under the "Salvagetti" name. The logo was a trash can with two laurels.

Fast forward a year, when Nick gave me a bike, a 1989 Trek 330, that needed a little love, and I was forced to make several stops at the Salvagetti shop: New tubes, tune-up, a new chain when it wouldn't quit shifting on its own and I had to keep it in one gear all the time, new lock, and a new bottom bracket last week.

The guys at Salvagetti -- owner Scott, service manager Danny, and sales manager Greg, do "Almost Every Sunday Breakfast Rides" -- a short, easy ride to a breakfast place and coffee afterward. Nick talked me into joining them today at 8 a.m. since the weather forecast was not looking too friendly toward climbing rocks anywhere in the Front Range (highs of 32 everywhere, snow, maybe rain).

If it was too cold to go climbing, what the hell were we doing on bikes? It was probably 28 degrees as the ten of us pedaled towards the all-vegetarian (yes!) Watercourse Foods, which has moved to a new location on the corner of 17th Avenue and Emerson Street. However, we didn't ride too fast, or too far, which kept the cold to a minimum.

The whole ride, including the distance to Metropolis Coffee after breakfast, was less than three miles, but a ton of fun. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants a low-maintenance, "no need for spandex or for nervousness" ride on a Sunday morning. I was surprised how little talk about bikes I heard the entire morning.

Oh, and the Blue Plate Special at Watercourse is phenomenal.
