Blog Entry 41 of 181 Bad Mom
I call myself Bad Mom because at the time I came up with it, I was learning about the assumptions we put behind our words. I was following the pattern of not believing that my kids are okay, and speaking to them from that basis. I changed that, and it made a big difference. I am from Utah and my people are still living there. My husband was in the Air Force and we rattled around until we saw Colorado, and we stuck.

Losing One's Nose
Contributed by: Lisa Arata   on 12/3/2007

So, back at the Radiation Oncology center where I volunteer, I see an old man with a piece of gauze taped to his face, and the gauze looks like there's no nose underneath.

I sat down and spoke with him.
"Skin cancer?"
"Yep."
"That must've been hard to take."
"Yeah, it was."

He still smiled, though. Talked about his wife and how they'd been together for sixty years. He got back from the navy, met his wife, and three months later they were married. Never talked about divorce once. I told him that was a sensitive subject for me. He was a nice guy.

Later another old gentleman came in, and his nose was just grossly being overtaken by a black, red and greenish skin cancer. I asked him if he was going to have it operated on.
"Nope."
He changed the subject. We talked about Thanksgiving and the jigsaw puzzle. He complemented me on the tree decorating and ate candy. After awhile his bus came and he left his candy wrappers on the table.

Lesson learned:
If that's ever me, I'm getting my nose taken off. It's surprising what you can do without.
