Blog Entry 96 of 119 Bad Mom
I call myself Bad Mom because at the time I came up with it, I was learning about the assumptions we put behind our words. I was following the pattern of not believing that my kids are okay, and speaking to them from that basis. I changed that, and it made a big difference. I am from Utah and my people are still living there. My husband was in the Air Force and we rattled around until we saw Colorado, and we stuck.

Why did I get so gaga over a song?

I've completely broken my pledge to write about someone other than myself. I'm aware now that self-absorption is one of those resorts for people when their lives are out of balance. Other people get overly-guarded. Others people-please. These are all attempts for us to try to feel safe.

I'm wanting to comment on why I got so excited about Reason for Waiting. I still think it's about the most beautiful thing I've heard all month, better than I will still love you.

I read a book about learning styles and to summarize, it goes like this:

We have various ways of taking information into ourselves: Visual, Auditory, Sensory, and Verbally, and through physical movement. In school the information is largely visual and auditory and verbal, less so for physical and sensory. That's too bad for many people.

Why? Because these inputs have different effects on each of us. That is, there are three places within the person for taking in and processing information. One is the logic center, one is the creative center, and one is the emotional, less-conscious part.

I like music so much because it's rewarding to the emotional centers of my mind. But it's also like that for other auditory intake. I remember people's voices. I judge their emotional energy by their voice. When God speaks to me, it's with words of some kind, sometimes by the song that comes on the radio when I'm thinking about a problem. So, I wasn't your typical learner in school. I couldn't understand lectures on logical stuff.

When our kids have trouble in school, it's such a crime that we can't put them in a differently-oriented school. Why couldn't they learn math through physical movement? Why couldn't they get their reading with auditory help?

For another wonderful musical experience, look up Hedy West singing Shady Grove. So lovely.
