FE Ma no hands
Contributed by: Delmar Knudson   on 1/13/2007

To those who live in the outer reaches of civilization (outside Colorado):

FEMA has been unable to fund some of the ranches and such with emergency funds for the blizzards that have wiped out whole cattle herds in Southeastern Colorado. They need to compare snow gauge measurements from this year to past years, apparently.

This is being held up since in several areas no one can get at the snow gauges since they and the roads to them are buried in deep snow. Only one county has been approved for emergency disaster relief as of Jan 10.

Presumably, when the snow melts next spring and summer, FEMA will be able to get to the snow gauges and send emergency blizzard funds.

A pressing need in this country is for more rules and regulations; therefor, I am going to become a liberal. The conservatives, on the other hand, still continue to increasingly promulgate ever more rules for behavior in home and church, if not the government.

Seems like we need a high mucky-muck High Priest of Rules to interpret, expand, enforce, and produce more rules. Though, perhaps that's what we have in the Imam's, Pope, Bishops, and Attorneys General.

Obviously, Ten Commandments falls far short of what Jews, Conservative Christians, and Liberals must have. It's funny Moses didn't demand some additional commandments when he had the chance.

Your Histerical Reporter,
Delmar

Hi! I work for FEMA, and just wanted to clarify a couple of things. 1. FEMA does not give any grants to private businesses, including farmers and ranchers. We have no legal authority to do that. 2. What FEMA can do, however, we have already started doing. We received a request from the state for help with the two storms on January 5, and the President signed those requests on January 7. 3. We do have to have data to show why a particular storm qualifies for federal aid. We have to show it was a record or near-record snowfall for that area. The logic is, of course, that local and state governments can handle events normal for their areas, and the feds come in to help only when it is really an extraordinary event. We have to be able to show that with objective data -- there are ways to work around buried snow gauges, it just takes a little longer. (We've already added more six counties.) Randy Welch
