Blog Entry 11 of 12 DNC Street Beat
Hello there, I'm Erin Feese, a community journalist for YourHub.com. I'm pounding the pavement during the Democratic National Convention Aug. 25 through 28 to offer a woman-on-the-street view of what is going down downtown.

Celebrity sightings: Tops of their heads, anyway
Contributed by: Erin Feese   on 8/28/2008

Aug. 28, noonish -- Walking down the 16th Street Mall toward Civic Center, I suddenly encounter a huge crowd. Both sides of the street are packed, and the mall shuttle is backed up for blocks.

Protest? Someone getting arrested? Really cool street performer?

Nope. Celebrities.

Apparently, (and this is all from sources on the street, not confirmed, mind you) a group of actors had been dining at Earl's ( the celeb hotspot, it seems), and now needed to move across the street to another function at the Hard Rock Cafe. As I passed the Hard Rock, I head a lady say anxiously, "How are we going to get them across?"

So I decided to join the rest of the crowd blocking traffic and await "The Celebrity Appearance." I heard someone say that Oprah was in there, so I repeated that to the next person ("Oprah!!? Really??")... rumors are contagious, and they spread like wildfire in a gullible crowd.

If someone really wanted to disrupt the convention, just tell one person there is a celebrity in a restaurant, and you're waiting for them to come out. Then that person will tell another person, and another person will ask, "What's going on?" And then so on and so forth ...

Staff members from Earl's just stood on the restaurants second floor laughing down at us. One guy near me called his friend who worked there and asked, "Hey, if the cops start pushing us around, can you throw me a rope so I can climb to safety?"

Once the celebs finally emerged, flanked by bodyguards, I stood on my tip-toes and snapped photos like everyone else. I got glimpses of tops of their heads, but that was about it. Kind of underwhelming.

I did talk to two ladies who were closer than me and they said they saw Susan Sarandon, Anne Hathaway, Spike Lee and Tim Daly.

No idea if Oprah was really there or not.

I could never be a member of a paparazzi. It takes too much patience. And I don't really enjoy being bumped, jostled and nearly trampled in the name of celebrity photography.
