Who's donating to whom in Denver?
Contributed by: Eric J. Lubbers/YourHub.com   on 2/5/2008

Did you know that Bruce Benson and Hank Brown both donated money to Mitt Romney? Or that a Capitol Hill tutor named Andrew donated $707 to Barack Obama? I do. Thanks to The Huffington Post.

The Post has brought this year's presidential race fully and unequivocally into Web 2.0.

The interactive tool dubbed "Fundrace 2008" is an amazing Google Maps mashup that actually allows you to see who has donated to which candidate (and how much).

The tool is fascinating, allowing you to search by name (The only Lubbers on the list is a non relative by the name of Joel from Wisconsin who donated $250 to Barack Obama) by city (or individual ZIP codes) and even by occupation.

So who's donating what to whom in Denver?

The overall picture is pretty straight forward: $1,421,189 has been donated "by people who identified their city as 'Denver.'" $486,097 of that cash went to Republicans, while $935,092 went to Democrats.

In my home ZIP code of 80206, $229,420 was donated in total, overwhelmingly to Democrats. Also in my zip code, Cherry Creek developer (and rumored sweetheart of Michelle Kwan) Christian Anschutz is listed as donating $2,000 to Romney, while concert promoter Chuck Morris threw $1,000 toward the campaign of now-withdrawn New Mexico governor Bill Richardson.

And that's just one ZIP code.

It's fun to poke around and guess, too. For example, one address in the Cheesman Park neighborhood comes up as purple (the rest are color-coded red or blue). A click on the purple spot reveals that Susan Kirk, a consultant, donated $1,000 to Hillary Clinton, while Richard Kirk donated $350 to John McCain. I don't know the Kirks, or even if they are related beyond an address, but I can imagine some Odd Couple moments at the dinner table.

The list is entirely based on what individual donors list as their occupation, which could explain why it appears that an unemployed student at 21st Avenue and Humboldt Street managed to donate $3,200 to Ron Paul.

This tool will fascinate you more than it will inform you, but while you're watching the caucuses (or celebrating/loathing the results) check it out and see if you can't learn a little bit more about the political landscape of your neighborhood.

I wish people would donate to WORTHY causes or adopt a person in true need and help them directly. I have a good friend who makes just over the limit to qualify for public assistance yet cannot make ends meet. She had her life turned upside down when she went thru 4 hurricanes in less than 2 months time. She had NO help from FEMA. She is in poor health, she is trying to sell her furniture to pay regular bills and Dr bills. Yet people donate all this money to politicians who dont care about the average person. I do not understand Carol

I got a kick out of the "Entertainer" category entry: Cher donating to Joe Biden. So then I find an interview where she says she just loves him. I don't know why that strikes me so funny.

And Viggo Mortensen supports Kucinich. While John O'Hurley threw his Peterman-y cash at Giuliani. Strange world.

I'm noticing a theme among donations from software developers and webmasters. Also, if you really want something interesting, look up musician. Barry Manilow donated to Ron Paul. Lars Ulrich (of Metallica) to John Edwards. Tim Armstrong (of Rancid) to Obama.
