Blog Entry 51 of 125 Bad Mom
I call myself Bad Mom because at the time I came up with it, I was learning about the assumptions we put behind our words. I was following the pattern of not believing that my kids are okay, and speaking to them from that basis. I changed that, and it made a big difference. I am from Utah and my people are still living there. My husband was in the Air Force and we rattled around until we saw Colorado, and we stuck.

Do you believe in political magic?

In my opinion, the changes we want to see in this country aren't going to happen, not through any politician, in any radical way.

Illegal immigration: As long as businesses can get what they crave--cheap labor, and Mexicans and Central Americans can get what they need--a job doing anything at all--this situation is going to be with us. The factors that make it worse, such as the visa logjam, are too big of a mess. Therefore, politicians who say they'll solve the problem of illegal immigration are really pandering.

It would be a good first step just for us to get our minds wrapped around the problem and the steps to take to correct it, and then start small, and find out what Americans want to do about one doable part. I think the ability to get Americans to talk about things without resorting to stereotyping and prejudice would be a miracle!

Okay. Tax reform. Any candidate who says they have a simple, all-encompassing solution is just playing with us. Too many people are invested in the way things are, and such things as a "fair tax" and a "flat tax" are just hot air in the wind. Those who run the system know all the arguments against reform. Those of us who live in ignorance have no ideas how to solve things.

It would be a good first step for people just to understand their own taxation and benefits and interest, and to figure out what we could do without. It would be a great thing if those who receive social entitlements would have it on their taxes so they realize the money does not fall from the sky.

How about this: A full accounting of government spending by whom, to what, and why? In simple terms. And whyit can't be cut off--who would benefit and who would be hurt? I know. That'll never happen. We don't even understand the proportion of who is paying what and whenetc.

Like, I've heard that the wealthiest people only pay a small percentage of their income for taxes. BUT, that small percent is a lot of money, more money than the less wealthy people pay en masse.

Rhetoric gets in the way.

I've got a headache. But my point was, the politician's slogan of "Change, hallelujah," is just a slogan.I think we need to change the transparency level of the insiders.
