Blog Entry 24 of 97 Charmaine in the city

I've called the Denver area home for more than two
decades now. But this urban/mountain city is still full of surprises. I'll be posting my adventures here, as I explore local eateries, shops and sharing birthday and vacation photos. And once in a while, I'll throw in a music, movie or food review. I hope to keep this blog interactive, so don't be shy to suggest places I should visit. And check it out: I'm on Brendan's List. Rock on!

Alice in Chains unleashed at the Fillmore
Contributed by: Charmaine Robledo/YourHub.com   on 11/21/2006

I didn't start listening to Alice in Chains until me and my boyfriend Damon started dating back in 2004. We had very different musical tastes. Damon was into metal and hard rock, and I was more into alternative music.

To be honest, I never really heard of Alice in Chains. Yikes! I might just be reprimanded for that one. However, I did like all the songs by them that I had downloaded. My favorites are "Heaven Beside You" and "Down in a Hole." They're an impressive group; I like the style of guitarist/vocalist Jerry Cantrell and I thought the voice of Layne Staley, the band's former lead singer who tragically passed away in 2002, was so raw and soulful.

This year, as a birthday and anniversary present to Damon, I got us two tickets to see Alice in Chains at the Fillmore Auditorium, 1510 Clarkson St., on Nov. 20. Opening for them was Hurt, an alternative metal band. Damon and I grabbed a bite to eat before the show, so we only got to listen to a couple songs by Hurt before Alice in Chains came on.

They gave a performance that surpassed my expectations, playing such songs as "Drug of Choice," "Them Bones," "Grind" and "Rain When I Die." The band got William Duvall to do the lead vocals, and I have to say, he did a great job. During the concert, the band did an emotional tribute to Staley, showing clips of him at shows and during rehearsals.

I couldn't believe the sheer number of people there, as the last concert I attended at the Fillmore only filled half of the area. The crowd went all the way to the door, proving that Alice in Chains has always been and will continue to be a power-house group.

Good Rock music is timeless and all the great groups of today can thank The Beatles for starting it in 1964. I like Alice in Chains and especially the Red Hot Chili Peppers, glad to see them back.

When Layne died, I was working at a CD store. I found a used copy of Alice in Chains live and scribbled out "LIVE" and wrote in "DEAD" with a sharpie. I actually got in a lot of trouble for that.
