Denver rocks.

Led Zeppelin first went down in Denver
Contributed by: Eric J. Lubbers/YourHub.com   on 1/15/2008

I've been hearing a lot about Led Zeppelin as of late, what with their tight-pantsed reunion and new best-of, Mothership, plastered all over iTunes and the rest of the Web.

And wouldn't you know, my daily perusal of Colorado-related Wikipedia entries dug up the fact that Zep's very first performance on American soil was in Denver opening for Vanilla Fudge and Spirit at the Auditorium Arena (which became the Temple Buell Theater) back on Boxing Day 1968, when I was negative-16 years old.

A zip over to the official Led Zeppelin Web site (because as much as I love the wiki, it's not the most reliable resource in the world) confirmed it, complete with a clipping from a review by Rocky Mountain News critic Thomas McCluskey.

The review is a classic, with the delightfully square headline of 'Rock' Concert Is Real Groovy, and this choice line, confirming what I've always kind of thought about Robbie: "Singer Robert Plant -- A cut above average in style, but no special appeal in sound."

Click here to read the whole review, with similar backhanded compliment / insult style.

Here's the official page for the show *link*

Zep was always inventive, passionate, risque, even playful at times. Bonham made them the kings of 'Thud Rock.'
