Blog Entry 10 of 29 You call this work?
I'm a community journalist for Denver, South Denver and Glendale here at YourHub.com. I'll write here occasionally about fun stuff I do around the city, life here at YourHub.com world headquarters, my cat and dog, movies, television and the occasional domestic rant. You will most likely find me blogging when I'm on deadline and should probably be doing more urgent things.

Queen gave Idols a big challenge
Contributed by: Annie Hundley   on 4/12/2006

American Idol's musical theme last night did a good job of separating the wheat from the chaff. The remaining eight contestants had to pick a song from the music catalogue of Queen. Pretty challenging.

Those who have performed consistently well did great with Queen's music. Katherine McPhee sang a gorgeous rendition of Who Wants to Live Forever. Elliot Yamin rocked Somebody to Love, a song the judges pointed out had the most key changes and was the most difficult to sing.

On the other hand, the contestants who have been grating on my nerves continued to do so as they butchered great Queen songs. Bucky Covington turned Fat Bottomed Girls into a country song. Is he seriously still in the competition? Kellie Pickler's rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody didn't work. In Simon's words, it was just "weird."

Then there were the neither-here-nor-there performances - the ones that weren't actually bad, but didn't leave much of an impression. I'd put Ace Young ( We Will Rock You - "We will rock you gently, more like," Simon said), Chris Daughtry ( Innuendo - too obscure for Queen fans like me), Paris Bennett ( The Show Must Go On - no, Paula, that didn't show the world that Paris can rock) and Taylor Hicks ( Crazy Little Thing Called Love - dude, don't pick songs to show off your dance skills, 'cause you can't dance) in that category.

Tonight we find out who gets sent home. I predict Bucky because if I stick with him, one of these weeks I just might get it right.
