I'm a community journalist for Denver, South Denver and Glendale here at YourHub.com. I'll write here occasionally about fun stuff I do around the city, life here at YourHub.com world headquarters, my cat and dog, movies, television and the occasional domestic rant. You will most likely find me blogging when I'm on deadline and should probably be doing more urgent things.

Idol's Pickler sours singing standards
Contributed by: Annie Hundley   on 4/19/2006

This deep into the competition on American Idol, it's rare to have a singer that completely blows a performance. But that's exactly what happened last night.

Kellie Pickler screwed the pooch when she sang Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered. After the song ended Pickler cringed and admitted: "I butchered it." Bingo. Pickler was off-key for most of the song and then seemed to think that singing faster would make the embarrassment end.

If Pickler isn't kicked off the show tonight, then this isn't a singing competition. But after the loss of Southerner Bucky Covington last week, a lot of his votes could have shifted to Pickler, also a Southerner, and keep her safe.

Last night's show was a plug for Rod Stewart's CD series Great American Songbook. Many of the contestants really shined with this music. Chris Daughtry showed his softer side singing What a Wonderful World.Taylor Hicks was fun and quirky as usual singing You Send Me.

Ace Young sang surprisingly well after weeks of falling into the bottom three, performing That's All. (Small complaint, though: No more ponytails, Ace. Please!) Elliot Yamin charmed with It Had to Be You.

Paris Bennett's voice sounded like a replica of Billie Holiday singing These Foolish Things.

The star of the night, however, was Katherine McPhee. McPhee sang Someone to Watch Over Me. Simon got it right when he said McPhee looked like she was a winner from a previous season returning for a performance.

I'd say the three most likely candidates for the bottom three this week are Pickler, Yamin and Young. But we'll have to wait and see...
