Blog Entry 9 of 149 Bad Mom
I call myself Bad Mom because at the time I came up with it, I was learning about the assumptions we put behind our words. I was following the pattern of not believing that my kids are okay, and speaking to them from that basis. I changed that, and it made a big difference. I am from Utah and my people are still living there. My husband was in the Air Force and we rattled around until we saw Colorado, and we stuck.

Political, Immoral, Practical aspects of Abortion
Contributed by: Lisa Arata   on 5/15/2007

I read Bill Buckley's column today, which I patched through to in the Drudge Report. He spoke of the necessity to look at abortion through more than a political lense, as it is a moral issue as well. Buckley was talking about Republican presidential candidates but I'm going to talk about my life.

Politically abortion is legalized nationally under the heading of "right to privacy." This is all just something put into law but not settled in the hearts of the American people. The right to privacy, I'm told, isn't in the constitution but somehow it was interpreted into it. A right to privacy is one of those gray things. On the white end of it, we don't want others to feel licensed to get into our business. On the black end of it, people do degrading things in private that have public consequences and it would be nice to be able to stop the public spillover onto innocent bystanders. Politically, someone else's abortion is none of my business. I'm so glad to let it be.

My sister Diane was born because my mom couldn't get a legal abortion.Mom had to get married to my dad.

My sister Pam was born because Mom got to the pharmacy too late to pick up her first packet of The Pill.

I was born because my mom realized she could cope with life even with these children.

And my brother Jon was born because Mom knew children are a miracle.

Morally, abortion is wrong, in my opinion, because we were all blastocysts, embryos and fetuses at one time--how is it okay for someone to decide to end my life or someone else's? In a moral sense, we shouldn't be aborting human beings. It's cannibalistic and it hurts the soul of humanity.

That being said, I do all kinds of immoral things. I flout speed limit laws. I sometimes thinkhatful thoughts and do not love my enemies. I judge others. I covet. I'm slothful and wrathful and gluttonous. I could be more moral than I am.

If I'd gotten pregnant in college, I wouldn't have had an abortion. But I appreciated the availability of it. I was in good circumstances but If I'd needed it, I'd have wanted to get it safely and legally.

Practically, abortion is going to happen whether it's legal or not. It would happen less if it were illegal, and many women would die in their quest to get rid of another child. If people see a need for it, they'll do it.

My friend Tina had an abortion. The guy she was with was bad, and she had a career just starting. She wasn't well prepared for parenting, as her life had been a mess. Her new career was the result of much effort on her part. It was a mercy for her to be able to get one.

What's the answer?

Morality will have to change. No, I can't impose my morality on someone else. the morality of the masses will have to evolve naturally.

Every little thing I do that makes the world a better place is going to make it so someday a quantum leap will occur, where more and more women have hope that they can cope with a pregnancy and a baby. I don't think women really want to kill their own, unless they're in terrible stress, like animals will do. I think there won't be any miracle. We'll all just have to do better with ourselves. There won't be a great salvation sweeping down from heaven. Words will be misinterpreted. Actions speak for us.
