Blog Entry 46 of 125 Bad Mom
I call myself Bad Mom because at the time I came up with it, I was learning about the assumptions we put behind our words. I was following the pattern of not believing that my kids are okay, and speaking to them from that basis. I changed that, and it made a big difference. I am from Utah and my people are still living there. My husband was in the Air Force and we rattled around until we saw Colorado, and we stuck.

Hand in Proper Relationship With Glove
Contributed by: Lisa Arata   on 12/16/2007

Here's what's happening with my coincidental seasonal depression/midlife crisis/transition from being a homemaker that has really got me now.

Decided to go to church--St. Patrick's Presbyterian, downtown Greeley--where I knew I'd hear a gem of good advice because I always did in the past, even if I didn't want to take it.

The speaker said, "You know mankind is made in God's image. Well..." he held up a glove and said, "This glove is made in the image of my hand." He put the glove on, saying, "When the glove is in right relationship with my hand, it works."

And the point of the sermon was that too much in life we want to play God and make our own kingdom, and try to do things that will prove to ourselves that we're great. Like have a nice house, be popular, etc.

And right now, I'm feeling at the bottom. None of the things I thought would prove I'm great have panned out, so I got quite low down.

What a great thought--that my emptiness could be the very place for God to dwell.

I didn't consider much that I don't really believe in a paternalistic God or a literal Jesus Christ. I could just as easily translate that point into this: Your wounded ego tries to compensate for its feared inadequacies, but if you truly accept yourself you can say, "I am I," strengths and weaknesses and all.

Saying it's God is kind of a nice thing because then you have to accept an agency that is bigger than you and beyond your control. That's comforting because so much of the trouble of life feels crazy and threatening.

I'm toying with a new idea about God: That it isn't like a Father in the Skies is hovering over us waiting to change our diapers of various sorts.

Or, it's not that God is the hand and I am the glove. It's more like God is the hand and I am a nervecell in the finger.

In other words, God doesn't orbit around humanity, but humanity orbits around God.

Does that make sense?

Maybe God is the intelligence of the patterns and purposes of the universe.

Actually.. my beliefs after studying several religions in college is... There is one God.... The god of all the religions... and if you want to get more technical... god is energy, and we're all made of energy..We are God... and that's what the final chapter of the text said.. which agreed with my conclusions... We are creators... ;)

I like knowing that God is bigger than me and I can leave things in His hands when they become too much for me. I also believe in Jesus Christ and the hope of heaven. Keep searching Lisa.

I have given the whole God thing a lot of thought, too. I guess it is a personal reality.
