United Methodist Bishops' Misguided Manifesto
Contributed by: Brian Olson   on 12/23/2007

Much to my chagrin, when reading my church bulletin from St. Luke's United Methodist Church, one of the articles deals with a manifesto from the national church's Bishops.

St. Luke's is a warm and loving Church, but the church bulletin is no place for political opinion. Especially when it is so one-sided.

In the article, it calls for the immediate withdrawl of our troops from Iraq, and even provides a link to a website where you can sign a petition urging immediate withdrawl.

It sadded me greatly.

The Bishops ignore the fact we didn't start this war, and by their manifesto gives aid and comfort to those sworn to kill us. Plus there was no link to any sites of the islamic terrorists so we could urge them to stop their murderous bombings that kill innocent men, women and children each day.

Talk about myopic! Talk about naive. Ok, let's talk about it more.

Let's be clear. This is clearly a war between good and evil. And the Bishops took the wrong side.

Like those who still whine and complain each year on the anniversary of the Hiroshima bombing, they forget that there never would have been a Hiroshima if there first hadn't been Pearl Harbor.

I had the great honor to meet General Paul Tibbets, who commanded the Enola Gay.My father was a bomber pilot and was getting ready to lead his squadron for the invasion of Japan. He was thankful that Tibbets and his crew dropped "The Big Cookie" as my dad called it, because it ended the war. He also agreed that the mission saved a million allied casualties. My father-in-law served aboard the USS Missouri and was present when the Japanese surrendered in Tokyo Bay.

They started it. We finished it.

Thankfully I was able to extend my father's appreciation to General Tibbets, who by any measure was a wonderful and gracious man. A picture of the Enola Gay hangs in my office. It is signed by General Tibbets and many members of the crew.

As a member of the 41st Annual National Security Forum at the Air War College, I got a sobering education as to the evil in the world that wants to destroy us, our nation and way of life.

I've also been fortunate in my civilian career to be deployed with numerous Navy, Army and Air Force units. This includes deployments aboard 3 aircraft carriers, a nuclear attack submarine, a guided missile cruiser, numberous trips in the field with military units and combined operation between these services.

No one likes peace better than the men and women serving out nation. And let's all pray for their safe return. But not surrender.

Again, we didn't start this. And despite the misguided manifesto by the United Methodist Bishops, we will finish it.

I agree. Separation of church and state goes both ways! I've quit many a church because I knew the politics of the adherents and thought their political ideas stunk, so their religious ideals must be bogus too.

The author is very confused, but then again his government and party has worked very hard for decades to confuse him. Here's some help for him: 1. Iraq had nothing to do with 9-11. 2. Our invasion of Iraq has strengthened radical Islam and increased worldwide terrorism. 3. Our Army is pinned down and bleeding in Iraq. Every day we stay weakens us further and gets us further from our goals. The Methodist Bishops are right on the money. Maybe they're taking "Thou shall not kill" a lot more seriously than a lot of our other supposed Christians.
