Too many Packers fans at Broncos game
Contributed by: Travis Henry/YourHub.com   on 10/30/2007

Oh, where have you gone Broncos nation?

As I settled into my south stands seat for the Monday night match up between the city's beloved Broncos and the cheeseheads from the way up north I noticed a disturbing presence. Packers fans to the right of us, Packers fans to the left of us and Packers fans in the row right in front of us.

Slices of foam cheese could be seen dotting the stadium and the excruciating chant of "Go, Pack, Go!" was often louder than any cheer for the home team.

When I first started regularly going to home games in the mid '90s, any fan wearing an opponent's jersey entered the south stands at their own great risk. Not anymore.

This wasn't a one-time phenomenon due to baseball hopes. The game before saw Steelers fan invade Invesco Field at Mile High waving those terrible yellow towels. For the last couple years we've seen a large influx of Eagles, Patriots and Raiders fans. Raiders fans at Mile High. There oughta be a law.

What's worse is that I heard someone wearing the orange and blue ask an old school Broncos fan who was urging the defense to hold up against Favre and company to sit down so they could watch the game. Sit down? In the south stands? When the other team is driving?

We can blame Shanahan, Cutler and especially Dre Bly for the team's loss last night, but I really believe the fans of Denver have let the team down. Not in a Brandon Marshall rant kind of way either.

I'm still trying to put my finger on what went wrong with the Mile High mystique. Fellow tailgater Steve Stansbery thinks the move to Invesco has made it so diehard Broncos fans can no longer afford tickets. He thinks that season ticket holders now regularly sell their tickets online to the highest bidders no matter what their allegiance is.

I think the reason for so many enemy jerseys in Broncoland also has a bit to do with a mediocre team that isn't winning big anymore. And that's too bad.

I'm interested in your take. Leave me a comment below.

Go Broncos.

the south stands need to rise again. i'm sick of fair-weather fans coming to games and yelling at real fans to sit down so they can enjoy the internet bought tickets. IF YOU WANT TO ENJOY THE GAME QUITELY STAY HOME. and if you season ticket holders read you ticket agreement you'll see it's against bronco policy to sell you tix on the internet. stop doing it and i won't have to sit by some lame cheesehead.

Who calls a quarterback draw from the 3-yard line with 22 seconds left in the game? How about a nice roll out, if he's open throw the ball, if not and you have a lane run, if not toss it into the stands...Shanny ugh!

Our once proud fan base has been diluted by the influx of fair weather fans. These are not the same people I grew up watching the games with. Now you are just as likely to sit next to a trash talker rooting for the other team but not wearing his team colors, as you are to sit next to a good old die hard. This is mile hi! Have some pride you losers! You would not see that kind of stuff in Green Bay. The new mile high does not draw the same crowd that the original did. Our fans are still better than those in San Fran and Phoenix and even Chicago but we are no longer the best in the NFL. Not as a whole at least. I don't live in the homeland anymore but will always be a die hard. No booing from here.

Boy oh boy Travis, do I agree with you! My husband Ryan and I were pretty distraught being surrounded by Packers fans near our seats in the north stands as well. The Steelers game was worse. It was just heartbreaking to lose that game, and it was even harder to take with the laughter and smiles of cheeseheads all around me. We need a Broncos fan revival.

It breaks my heart to watch the Broncos lose. I think Joey might have a point here.

I'm with you Travis, but you already knew that. Besides, as a Ravens fan, my opinion probably doesn't count. On the other hand, if it's not the Ravens, I'm cheering the Broncos louder than some "proud natives." Doesn't seem right.

It's time to start talking about letting Shanahan go. He gambles with low-character players (i.e. Travis Henry, Darryl Gardener) far too often and it always comes back to bite the Broncos.

Sarah, I did hear that comment, and similar knocks just kept coming, huh? I guess watching the Rockies-Diamondbacks games with similarly biased commentators on TBS' payroll prepped me for it.
