Blog Entry 22 of 76 YourHub is a great forum
My wife says I have an opinion on everything. I guess that is correct as I possess what I call "McKnowledge": Knowing pretty much about a lot of things but not a lot about anything in particular. It is a type of surface knowledge learned as a salesman that allows me to converse with anybody from Snoop Dogg to George Will. It's fun but occasionally I have to get down and dirty and use that pesky "research" when I am writng a column since it is every columnist's nightmare to make an error. Short bio: I spent 4 years in the U. S. Air Force, graduated from the University of Central Missouri, had a career in sales that allowed me to move to Scottsdale, AZ in 1989. In 2004 I wrote a 7 part series on the history of television through the 1970's for TV TOME (now TV.com). I have done some TV ,radio, and public address work and write columns and blogs for the SCOTTSDALE REPUBLIC section of THE ARIZONA REPUBLIC and the NORTH SCOTTSDALE INDEPENDENT. I enjoy doing blogs and stories for YourHub in the ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS.

Give it up, Denver, you've little to sell!
Contributed by: Jim McAllister   on 5/1/2007

All right, Denver. Last year when you put your billboards in the Phoenix/Scottsdale area extolling the virtues of the Mile High City, I felt sorry for you and even did a column in the YourHub.com section of the Rocky Mountain News trying to help your little town. After all, if you had to do billboards in Phoenix to scare up some tourists, I figured we would be neighborly and try to help you out.

Apparently this year you are trying to take advantage of our good nature. As I opened my Arizona Republic the last few mornings, the first thing I saw on the front page was a color ad telling me to be a "Denver Local." You have to be kidding, please take a look at the record:

Both places have mountains. We have the Superstitions and the McDowells. You have the Rockies. That's two ranges to one in our favor. All right, the Rockies are a little taller but height isn't everything. We have the Lost Dutchman gold mine in the Superstitions. We can't help it no one has found it yet.

How about weekend getaways by car? We are 350 miles from San Diego and 298 from Las Vegas. I thought I would remind you of that since you are 1,061 and 728 miles respectively from those places and you don't get out much with the Denver weather being what it is.

Speaking of weather, how was the snow this year? I see you had 72 inches of the white stuff through March with more expected. Our snowfall in Phoenix/Scottsdale is very consistent. It is always zero. That's because our average temperature in December, January, and February is 67 degrees. Denver typically has temperatures in the -10 to -20 range during those three months. Is it possible to even go outside when it is that cold? And, you know that 300 days of sunshine you like to brag about? The Valley of the Sun has 325. Once again, sorry!

In the summer, Phoenix's average temperature is 103 compared to Denver's 85, but, who is going to quibble over a measly18 degree difference? We have a different type of heat in Arizona and if we faint from it, we simply say, "But, it's a dry heat." However, the golf green fees are a lot cheaper than Denver's, if you survive. Just drink plenty of water and have an air conditioned cart..

Denver states that you can "stroll through our historic neighborhoods." The city has "lower downtown." It is an old red brick warehouse district that has been converted to various pubs and night spots. Nearby are the Santa Fe art galleries. Phoenix/Scottsdale has thirty-six restored neighborhoods and we will put our nightlife, restaurant, and museum scene up against anyone.

Last but not least, the true evaluator of a city's worth: the sport teams. Baseball: World Series wins: Diamondbacks 1, Rockies 0. Basketball: 2007 season: Suns, 61-21, Nuggets: 45-37. NFL Football: Broncos.....Uh, there isn't enough space left to discuss football (ahem, sorry).

I hope I have taught you guys to not mess with us. Enough is enough. Oh, by the way, what are the round trip fares to Denver in August?

Steve, You must have a lot of time on your hands, you keep coming back for more. You remind me of a boxer who can't win but thinks he may have a puncher's chance. Thanks for all the posts. DB, I don't know what to say to you other than TRAITOR! Just when I needed you the most against these oxygen starved people like Steve! I guess you guys don't know this blog is a sequel. See my story archives for "A Tale of Two Cities" from 6-28-06. Thanks for your comments, guys. You're good sports (I think).

Is Phx better than Denver? No. I grew up in Phx (30 yrs) and worked in CO (10 years). Phx is one the most vacuous, vain, detached, and socially disintegrated cities in the US. It has it's good points, but the highly transient nature of move ins and outs make it a fragmented shadow of a community. The beauty of CO is that when the recreation months arrive, then people actually get out and live and enjoy each other and life during the summer. Additionally, one can golf every month of the year, this year notwithstanding. It is healthy for kids to get out and play during the summer and have bbq's etc....In Phx, Dad sweats over the BBQ for 30 evil minutes before racing into the house with BBQ in tow.....Phx is miserable half the year. The author of the original blog topic is on crack to make the statement that Phx is better than Denver, (if you are child of Satan perhaps......)

Steve, Ok, if you want to count hockey, the Quebec Nordiques....oops! I mean Avalanche won a couple of Stanley Cups. It's too bad that hockey is so insignifcant that no major network has time for it. Please don't embarrass yourself and talk about meaningless lacrosse and arena football. Next you'll want to say you won the MISL title. The D-Backs were purchased? At least it was a good purchase. How is Mike Hampton doing these days? That was a brilliant Rockies move. You may like light rail but it loses about $14 million per year that the city has to cover. LR also only replaces about 1/8 of one lane of freeway and costs $65 million/mile to build, great system! You have no argument on this stuff. I'm out of space, thanks for the 3 comment blocks. Call me when the Rockies hit .500 mark.

One last thing - this time regarding sports; Four major sports championships (Two Super Bowl wins + Two Stanley Cup wins) and two second-tier sport championships (One Arena Bowl + one NLL Cup) for Denver compared to a single, measley, purchased, World Series victory for the fair-weather fans of the Diamondbacks. (or is it the Nationals, based on their new unis?) Scoreboard.

Well, I can certainly clarify my comments for you - "relatively low crime rate" is in comparison to Phoenix, which has a murder rate of 2.24 times the national average - Denver's is 33% lower at 1.47 times the national avg. Keep in mind that those numbers are strictly Phoenix and Denver proper. "Year-round" recreation IS the case, 99 years out of 100. For snow lovers, this year was great, though! Regarding transportation, yes - light rail IS what I was talking about. No boondoggle here - high ridership is the case, in fact trains have been ADDED since the launch of the latest four lines. Do the math: 200+ passengers per train car x 3 train cars running at 15 minute frequency = potentially 2400 cars (plus their pollution) per hour taken off of I-25! That makes sense to me!

I'll give you the "push" on dining, though - Scottsdale has a tremendous nightlife, if you don't mind Mike Tyson crashing parties and running his car into cop cars. And yes, Robert Frost did give us that literary gem, but I'll give you a real-world quote based on my personal experience; "Cinderblock walls plus 100 degree heat make terrible neighbors." The battle between which city is better will go on long after you and I are off this earth, but I can assure you that anyone who has not lived in (not just visited) Colorado truly does not know what they're missing.

Jeffrey, thanks for your comment. It's nice to hear SOMEONE without a jingoistic look at Denver. It must be the lack of oxygen that makes these folks fantasize about their town. Their sports teams are a joke, look at the Rockies: bad again. The Nuggets: Rolled over for the Spurs. Now the Suns will have to eliminate the Spurs and once again Phoenix will have to show Denver how it is done. How about CU in football? ASU stinks but can always beat CU. The door of Phoenix is open to you, Jeff. Welcome back!
