Man fosters long relationships with people, hair

Gordon Boswell's relationships with his clients can last longer than their relationships with their husbands.

Or at least that's what the owner of Gordon's on Sixth, 1224 E. Sixth Ave., says.
Boswell has been cutting hair for the better part of 15 years and has owned and operated Gordon's on Sixth for six.

During that time, he's fostered lifelong relationships with clients and their hair.

"Some of my people I've had the entire 15 years," he said. "The majority of my business is return clientele."

Cutting someone's hair for 15 years naturally leads to a bond.

"The best part of my job is the wonderful relationships I have with my clients," he said.

Boswell can't remember a time when he didn't want to be a stylist for a living.

"I always wanted to be a hairdresser, ever since I was a little boy," he said. "For me it was always about wanting to feel the best I could and do that for other people."

Boswell said that for the first 10 or so years of his career, he worked as a stylist for a shop in Cherry Creek before deciding to venture out on his own.

"I wanted to stay in the proximity but outside of Cherry Creek, mostly because of the parking and the high rents," he said.

Besides Boswell, five people work in his salon, cutting hair, acting as a receptionist and, in general, making people look and feel fabulous. Boswell alone performs between 10 and 12 services a day.

Besides cutting, styling and coloring hair, Boswell also has the task of keeping the shop running efficiently.

"I think running the business is a lot more challenging than cutting hair," he said. "But I'm a hairdresser first."

He says he also has purposefully kept his shop small.

"I think the fact that my salon is smaller makes it easier (to manage), but it can be tough for me to get out of bed in the morning, too," he said. "Especially after two martinis."

Even though it can be stressful running a business and also being a hairdresser, there is a lighter side.

"One time, a lady brought in her dog and wanted her own hair color to match the dog's," he said.

"I got pretty close," he laughed.

All joking aside, Boswell takes what he does very seriously.

"A great haircut brings out the best in people," he said.
