Oil and Water Do Mix: A Father/Daughter Art Show
Featuring Jeanne Hougen and Barry Marler
The Father/Daughter Art Show features original watercolor paintings by Barry Marler and oil paintings by Jeanne Hougen. This Father/Daughter team will mix it up at the Byers-Evans House Museum, 1310 Bannock St., Denver from May 2-June 27 as they present their work in a show entitled "Oil and Water Do Mix". Opening receptions are hosted by the artists on Friday, May 2 from 5 - 9 p.m. and Saturday, May 3 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Exhibit hours areTuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. on first Fridays.
Jeanne Hougen is a member of Plein Air Artists Colorado (PAAC), Oil Painters of America (OPA) and the East Boulder County Artists (EBCA). In 2007 she received an Honorable Mention Award at the 12th Annual PAAC Juried Art Show and an Emerging Artist 1st place award last year at Denver's High Plein Air Show.
Hougen has had the good fortune to work with Chuck Ceraso and Pat Redding and has attended painting workshops with nationally known plein air painters, John Budicin, William Scott Jennings and Clyde Aspevig. In her spare time she studies much admired artists Edgar Payne and Kevin MacPherson.
Asked about her work, Hougen said, "I would describe my style as representational, with an impressionistic flair, as I love to capture light and its unique effect on color in everyday scenes."
Barry Marler received a degree in art from Wichita State University and pursued a successful forty-one year career in commercial art. He is well known in the computer graphic design world starting his career as a technical illustrator at Boeing Aircraft, producing masterful book illustrations at Jeppesen-Sanderson.
His career took an interesting turn at Coors when computer graphics took over the art field and setting up one of the first of its kind computer graphics art departments for Coors. While with Coors his department won several prestigious international awards. He went on to work for a large advertising company as director of digital imaging until his recent retirement.
Born in California and raised in the Great Plains Marler is at home with rustic landscapes and, after a thirty year absence, has found passion and fulfillment in his watercolor brush. About the upcoming Father Daughter Art Show May 3-June 27 at the Byers Evans House Museum, Barry enthusiastically says, "It's a true joy to share the love of art with my daughter."
