Description: The Muse Gallery at the WestEnd presents "Beyond the Earth Mother" - New works by Longmont sculptor Grahame Atkinson. The current exhibit reflects his abiding interest in the investigation of the concept of "The Earth Mother", a spiritual figure who is both of the earth and from the earth embodying creation and creator. The newer pieces tend more towards the abstract but are still recognizably based on the female form.
"I use the female figure as metaphor. In her I see the personification of the interconnectedness of nature and humanity and the cyclical character of existence. She is sometimes pregnant , but not always. She embodies the past, present and the future and is always looking forward to new horizons. She is, and always will be, the genesis of the Earth's bounty."

Grahame has energetically pursued his full-time art career since he immigrated to Longmont from England in September of 1990. He utilizes many different sculptural mediums in his works including clay, found tree roots, and rocks, which give his pieces a strong individual presence. His works have been exhibited both throughout the country and internationally. The WestEnd is a dedicated space within the Muse gallery created to provide space for diverse well-known and emerging artists with a variety of themes which include national and local talent. The opening reception will be Friday, November 13, 2009, from 6 - 9 pm. the reception will be catered by the Sugarbeet Restaurant. The exhibition runs through November 13 through December 23.
